How a Silicon Valley Startup Plans to Use Crypto Tech and a Biometric Orb to Launch a Global Basic Income

Some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley are working on an extremely ambitious project aimed at distributing cryptocurrency as a form of global basic income, and biometric technology will play a key role in that.

The effort was revealed in a round-up from Bloomberg that has practically become a soft launch of sorts, with project sponsors and supporters not yet ready for a formal announcement. However, two of these directors – Sam Altman and Alexander Blania – agreed to give Gillian Tan and Ellen Huet some details of the release.

Altman is best known as the past president of Y […]

Readers’ Letters: Who pays for SNP dream?

Readers’ Letters: Who pays for SNP dream?

© PA Further to the letter by DE (EE, June 17) asking “can an independent Scotland afford to pay pensioners?”, there is also the radical pledge by the SNP to deliver a “universal basic income”.

This is meant to replace the benefits system , including pensions, with “free” cash for every man, woman, and child. This is to be championed as a way to reduce poverty.

This threatens to be exceedingly expensive, which I don’t think has ever been costed by the SNP, but has been independently estimated to cost taxpayers an extra £60 billion. How will this be funded? I believe […]

Detroit is getting $426 million. Here's where Detroiters say that money should go.

Daisy Jackson is a fourth-generation Detroiter who has lived in her Islandview home for 50 years. As the city of Detroit decides how to spend an influx of federal money, for Jackson, neighborhood investment looks like fixing up homes.

Block clubs and neighborhood associations need financial support, said Denise Lyles, 62 of Detroit’s Dexter Linwood area, where her family has lived for nearly a century.

Chase Cantrell, 37 of Detroit’s Bagley community, thinks the city should ramp up funds for Black and brown developers and pilot a universal basic income program. These three residents are among more than 3,000 others who, over […]

“We must build a new pillar of social protection in the form of a universal basic income”

Tribune. The immense social inequalities highlighted by the anger of the “yellow vests” have been further aggravated by the pandemic. Associations estimate that in 2020 the number of people living below the poverty line – which, in France, is set at 60% of median income ( i.e. 1,075 euros in 2020 ) – has crossed the 10 million mark, or almost 15% of the population.

Fortunately, the social assistance policy makes it possible to limit the deterioration in living conditions. But it is restrictive and very incomplete. And the brutal brake on the economy during the pandemic demonstrated that social […]
