Andrew Yang Can Go Away Now

Andrew Yang Can Go Away Now

I was born into a small, California Ranch-style home in Queens, New York sometime in the mid-’70s (that’s all you need to know about THAT thankyouverymuch .) I was raised there, went to school in Queens, spent a lot of time on the streets of New York City narrowly avoiding trouble. I also spent lots of money in amazing stores in The Village (RIP Trash and Vaudeville.) I attended a state college, and the only beaches I knew until I was an adult were the ones on Long Island and in Rockaway.

Basically, I’m about as New York as you […]

Our adventure with Universal Basic Income

Our adventure with Universal Basic Income

When the idea of a Universal Basic Income started floating around a few years ago, it was touted as a saving grace for low-income people to increase their dignity and raise them out of poverty. Many people had strong reactions against paying people not to work, but the progressives out-shouted them, and a few select cities started carefully curated programs to test it out.

However a wider experiment with UBI has been happening over the last year, and the results are just becoming apparent.

When the COVID lockdowns hit, millions upon millions of people filed unemployment claims. No one could blame […]

Piketty: Basic income, a job guarantee, and inheritance for all must all be implemented

Covid has given the world a moment to re-evaluate our relationship to work, life and social justice. How can we create new policies to meet these new times?

By: THOMAS PIKETTY (LeMonde)

The Covid crisis is forcing us to rethink the tools of redistribution and solidarity. Proposals are springing up everywhere: basic income, job guarantee, inheritance for all. Let’s say it straight away: these proposals are complementary and not substitutable. In the long run, they must all be implemented, in stages and in this order. Let’s start with basic income. Such a system is dramatically lacking today, especially in the […]

MPs urge Foreign Secretary to act over deadly violence against Colombian protesters

Labour has urged Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to act over a wave of violent anti-government protests in Colombia, with dozens reported to have been killed.

In a letter to Mr Raab , three Labour MPs said the UK has “so far failed” to hold the Colombian Government to account and “demand an end to the unacceptable state violence against civilian protesters”.

They said human rights watchdogs have reported at least 47 deaths in the protests, with around 100 people reported missing and more than 800 “arbitrary” arrests made.“The use of live ammunition has resulted in the deaths of many peaceful protesters, […]

Universal Income plans depend on Westminster

Universal Income plans depend on Westminster

MARK DRAKEFORD’s announcement that the Welsh Government plans to trial Universal Basic Income in a few locations in Wales captured headlines in online media.

The First Minister was variously said to have ‘hinted’ at a trial or announced a trial would take place.

However, nobody should have been surprised by the First Minister’s announcement. Not only was the policy contained in Labour’s Manifesto for May 6’s election – a bit more than ’a hint’ – but also the principle of holding a trial in Wales was enthusiastically passed by the last Welsh Parliament in September last year. It was a policy […]

Dan Sutter: Is this the start of government-guaranteed income?

Dan Sutter: Is this the start of government-guaranteed income?

Daniel Sutter The Federal government has issued three rounds of COVID “stimulus” checks and boosted unemployment benefits, first by $600 and now $300 per month. Is this the piecemeal start of a Universal Basic Income (UBI)?

Under a UBI (also called a basic income guarantee), the government pays all Americans every month, say $1,000. Many would more than pay this back through taxes.

Although I am a small-government libertarian, a UBI is attractive as a replacement for all current government assistance programs. Michael Tanner of the Cato Institute counts over 120 means-tested programs spending around $1 trillion, or over $20,000 for […]

Recovery, recall and record revenue: What’s driving Newsom’s budget | Salinas Valley Tribune

Check for $ 600. Universal pre-kindergarten. Forgiveness for backrents, traffic tickets, and utility bills. Large investments in power grids, broadband, wildfire prevention and drought mitigation. Tax cuts for small businesses and Hollywood.

Filled with huge surpluses and threatened by a campaign to bring him back from the office, California Governor Gavin Newsom last week offered the same government budget as when all of the studio’s audience won Pontiac at Oprah. This week, the state legislature adopted a $ 267.8 billion plan.

With the mid-June budget deadline and Newsome’s fellow Democrats controlling the state legislature, it’s unlikely that the broad priorities will […]
