Initiatives to provide guaranteed income have seen unprecedented momentum in recent years, but the idea is hardly a new one. In fact, one advocate of this idea was Martin Luther King Jr.

“At the lowest economic level, poor whites and negroes, aged and chronically ill, are traditionally disorganized and therefore have little ability to force the necessary increase in income. They tend to stagnate in relation to the larger society. Or become even poorer,” wrote the civil-rights leader in his final book, “Where Do We Go From Here: Anarchy or Community?”
