Texas will soon be implementing a new anti-poverty initiative called the Uplift Harris guaranteed income program, which will provide nearly 2,000 families in Harris County with $500 per month for 18 months. The program is funded by the federal American Rescue Plan Act and aims to address economic inequity and reduce poverty exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. Applicants were selected through a randomized lottery process and had to meet specific requirements, such as having an income below 200 percent of the federal poverty line and residing in certain zip codes within Harris County.
