Cambridge allocates $22M in ARPA funds for guaranteed basic income program

Financially struggling families to get $500 per month for roughly 18 months

Cambridge will spend $22 million to give $500 per month in direct cash assistance to the city’s roughly 2,400 families living under the federal poverty level for approximately a year and a half. Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui delivered the news in her state of the city address before a seated crowd in Cambridge City Hall’s Sullivan Chamber on Wednesday night. She sourced the funding behind the ambitious initiative to Cambridge’s $88.1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds.
