Dear government, this big reform is key to creating more jobs in India

Representative Image A new report brought out by the Centre for Sustainable Employment at the Azim Premji University, State of Working India, shows how desperately India needs to rethink its jobs and labour strategy, with labour law reforms being the key thrust. Allaying, at least for now, the fears of automation eating up jobs, the report says the replacement of workers in organised manufacturing by machines has been slowing down even as the number of jobs supported by Rs 1 crore of real fixed capital (in 2015 prices) had fallen from 90 in the 1980s to 10 in 2010; […]

Workers shouldn’t fear the rise of the robots

Workers shouldn’t fear the rise of the robots

It’s easy to panic about automation and AI, but they’re coming so we have to grab the opportunities with both hands We’re all doomed. Technology has ruined us and will soon destroy what’s left of our humanity. Algorithms will corrupt free will. Automation will degrade the value of work. We’re becoming slaves to the machines, flotsam on an uncontrollable tide of progress.

Forecasts about the effects of technological advances are almost invariably gloomy and of late have been infused with apocalyptic hysteria. New techs and tech-driven behaviours are always discussed, first and foremost, as threats rather than opportunities. Fretting about […]

New York City high schools should expand vocational education

New York City high schools should expand vocational education

A group of students doing their work in a classroom workshop near Robert Bosch Vocational School in Ulm, Germany. The United States is entering an era of dramatic economic upheaval as the industrial economy – and, increasingly, even the service sector – automates tasks once performed by humans. In 20 years, many of the jobs currently held by people without college degrees, including cab and truck drivers, forklift operators and even line cooks, could be filled by robots. Last year, a report by the McKinsey Global Institute found that up to 73 million American jobs could be lost to […]

Airport workers in New York, New Jersey to receive minimum of $19 per hour

Airport workers in New York, New Jersey to receive minimum of $19 per hour

It’s being called the highest minimum wage in the country. Thousands of airport workers in New York and New Jersey — baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, people at concession stands — will see their hourly pay rise to $19 by 2023, after the Port Authority Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Thursday to require businesses to increase the minimum wage.

“We believe this substantially improved minimum wage for airport workers will greatly reduce turnover, improve morale and develop better trained workers as critical contributors to airport operations and security in this post 9/11 world,” Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said […]

Automation Takeover

Automation Takeover

Halloween is right around the corner, so let us get spooky with some robot overlords. There is a widespread fear of automation and that robots will soon be taking all jobs from humans. Plenty of jobs that once belonged to people are being shifted to the mechanical realm. For example, assembly line positions are slowly being overtaken, as are telemarketers. Machines are being used more and more, meaning fewer jobs for workers. It is now being predicted that robots will do half of the workplace tasks by 2025. The problem

Companies are experiencing a lack of trained and […]

The future of work will not be full-time

The future of work will not be full-time

Many young people in school and university and their parents are wondering what our education system is doing to equip them for the future. Many also ask what will work look like, and indeed whether there will be work. They are questions asked because robotics, AI, algorithms, drones and robotic process automation are doing jobs human workers once did. The Australian Productivity Commission predicted that 40 per cent of jobs might be lost to automation over the next 10 to 15 years. Researchers like Frey and Osborne claim nearly half of 702 occupations studied are likely to be displaced […]

Many SC jobs will be lost to robots. Is yours safe?

Columbia’s “mom-and-pop hippie shop” has kept its doors open for more than two decades because it offers customers something online shopping and self-checkout kiosks can’t.

“We offer a human interaction,” James “Don” McCallister said Tuesday from his Five Points boutique, Loose Lucy’s. The polychromatic portal to the past offers tie-dyed clothing, tapestries, Grateful Dead posters and jewelry — all set against a classic rock soundtrack and the pervasive smell of incense.

“There is no reason people can’t get any of this stuff online.”McCallister is confident that he and his employees are safe, for now, from automation eliminating their jobs. Loyal customers […]

Meat companies short 2000 workers

Meat companies short 2000 workers

The meat industry has a shortfall of about 2000 workers at the peak of the season. A shortfall of 2000 workers across the export meat industry is costing millions of dollars in potential lost earnings, says Alliance Group chief executive David Surveyor.

"The reality is that at our Lorneville plant [Invercargill], on any given day in the season will have 100 people not turning up for work because of vacancies or absenteeism.

"If you take that and multiply it across all our plants that is about $20 million of value being lost that is not coming back to the co-operative’s farmer-owners," […]
