India Must Re-Skill Workforce To Keep Up With AI, Says Kris Gopalakrishnan

Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan this week reiterated what most tech giants have been saying all along — that artificial intelligence is not a direct threat to human jobs, but reskilling employees is crucial to advancement.

“India has a major challenge of transitioning its young workforce to the fourth industrial revolution called AI after the eras of agriculture, manufacturing and services… As the large workforce is engaged in diverse occupations such as agriculture, manufacturing and white-collar jobs in the services sector, it needs to be re-skilled to sustain the jobs, as AI will replace traditional jobs,” said Gopalakrishnan in an interview […]

Automation: Benefits and Employment

Automation is a force beyond our comprehension and will have a global impact like nothing else we have ever seen. This is not to say that it is altogether a new idea. Decades ago, science minded dreamers from around the globe would paint philosophical dreamscapes that portrayed a world built on the backs of human ingenuity.

Starting in the early 20th century, automation introduced itself to the world in the form of massive materials factories that could speed up the productivity of workers and create form perfect products for mass consumption. These behemoths of the old world have become standard […]

Is Artificial Intelligence a threat to your Job?

Is Artificial Intelligence a threat to your Job?

New technologies bring innovations, in business, and change the course of the work being done. But does a technical revolution bring shift in employment patterns too?

The Industrial Revolution which began in the 18th century was a transition to new manufacturing processes characterised by new inventions. The industrial revolution effectively increased the output levels and also saw improved systems of transportation, communication and banking. But the Industrial Revolution also took some key sacrifices, the change destroyed traditional jobs, but it also created new ones. The technology of the Industrial Revolution helped in discoveries of the modern industrial marvels and gave […]

The Impact of Technology on East Asian Economic Prospects

The Impact of Technology on East Asian Economic Prospects

Technology As ASEAN+3 economies pursue growth and resilience a decade after the onset of the global financial crisis, one question looms large: Is technology a boon or bane for these states?

The most advanced economies, such as Japan, Korea, and Singapore, are better-positioned than the rest of the region to face the challenges posed by technology. However, the impact of technology on growth and employment does not materialize in isolation. Rather, it manifests itself in interactions with ongoing changes in the nature of cross-border production and trade and shifts in demographics.

The technology-related challenges that emerge for economies across the region […]

Advancements in technology today reminiscent of 1960s sci-fi films’ vision of the future

Advancements in technology today reminiscent of 1960s sci-fi films’ vision of the future

THE 1960s vision of the future had us all living on lunar plantations and flying to work in spaceships.

Productions like 2001: A Space Odyssey and even the Jetsons displayed the nerdy fascination with the yet-to-come that was so prevalent at the time. 10 Film still from Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey: 2001 Most of it was escapism, and by and large people preferred to focus on getting by day to day and to let the future take care of itself.

But it wasn’t all about space and aliens. Sci-fi writers including Isaac Asimov and Arthur C Clarke dreamed up fantastical worlds […]

Automation, AI and the future of jobs

Automation, AI and the future of jobs

Will automation, AI and robotics mean a jobless future, or will their productivity free us to innovate and explore? Is the impact of new technologies to be feared, or a chance to rethink the structure of our working lives and ensure a fairer future for all? On googling ‘will a robot take my job?’ I find myself on a BBC webpage that invites me to discover the likelihood that my work will be automated in the next 20 years. I type in ‘editor’. “It’s quite unlikely, eight per cent” comes back. Quite reassuring – but, coming from a farming […]

Ricchuiti: Automation, Trump’s immigration policies’ impact upon making America great, again

Make America Great Again has been the rallying cry since the onset of Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency. In fact, according to many experts, during the course of his brief presidency, the economy pretty much has been great. Part of the reason so far has been Trump’s relaxation of regulations which businesses have found suffocating. Also, many experts and business people point to the recent tax break. But, what exactly does “Make America Great Again” mean in the area of its economy?

Last week, Tulane’s Freeman School of Business’s economist, Peter Richuiti and I, discussed various economic issues confronting […]

Will robots take care of grandma? Maybe, if she's rich

Some are heralding new technologies as the key to managing the so-called ‘silver tsunami.’ But there are significant privacy, labour and equality concerns. Reinventing Rwandan Industries: It’s All about Competitiveness!

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0 if you will, is here. Buzzwords such as block chain, artificial intelligence and robotics are smart technologies changing the face of industrial processes and production globally.

The question is, how are African countries positioning themselves to harness the opportunities and benefits of acquiring and adapting new technologies into their production processes? Kampeta Sayinzoga Rwanda understands the urgency and speed of this technological age, and that the only path to industrial growth is through development and integration of science, technology and innovation into enterprises.

This is evidenced in Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and the 7 Year […]

Protect Long Island’s economy in the age of automation

Protect Long Island’s economy in the age of automation

Change is coming — soon.

But will Long Island be ready?

Over the next decade or two, the region’s employment picture will undergo a significant transformation. Some jobs will disappear. Others will require very different skill sets. And there will be positions and industries that are only toddling now or are yet to be imagined. The Island has seen seismic shifts in its business landscape before. Too often, the region plays catch-up, confronting the fallout of a disappearing sector, like aerospace and defense, as it’s fading, or courting an industry, like biotech, years after it has sunk roots elsewhere. This time, Long Island […]
