What is the worst possible outcome for the United States if they get a universal basic income?

I think the worst possible outcome is: The increased taxes needed to provide funds for the UBI cause the economy to stall (though there is little evidence that tax rates have any direct effect on the economy, despite what low-tax advocates say).

The UBI payments to Americans don’t result in any significant reduction in poverty — the cost of living just increases. For example, if landlords know that all their renters just got a $1K increase in income per month, then the landlords will just raise rents by $1K. If the renters could afford the rent before (barely), then […]

Doss: Is Universal Basic Income similar to sharecropping?

Doss: Is Universal Basic Income similar to sharecropping?

Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang has separated himself from a crowded primary field by proposing Universal Basic Income (UBI). Under Yang’s UBI plan every American Adult will receive a “Freedom Dividend” of $1,000 a month. This is a pro-active plan to deal with the threat of automation to America’s workforce. Yang sells his proposal by telling audiences that civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. advocated for UBI right before his death. MLK stated that since capitalism can’t eliminate poverty, the government has a moral obligation to provide work or an income, and the simplest way to abolish poverty […]

Like many other millennials , the 25 year-old master’s student from Portugal “didn’t have any [financial] help from her parents” and had to balance the need to feed her brain with the need to put food on the table. “I knew I didn’t want to be in front of a computer—I wanted to be outside doing something to help the environment,” Bendixen says, explaining how difficult she found it to work and study at the same time.

Bendixen belongs to a generation that changes jobs more frequently than any other, a trend that annually costs […]

Why Basic Income Failed in Finland

Why Basic Income Failed in Finland

stillburning / Flickr In December 2018, the world-renowned Finnish experiment with basic income came to an anticlimactic end. This conclusion was unsurprising given that eight months earlier it had already been widely reported that the pilot program had been cancelled. (In reality, the government had announced that they would not extend the program.)

From January 2017 to December 2018, the Finnish social insurance agency Kela gave out a monthly payment of €560 (about $640) to two thousand unemployed persons — the kicker being that there were no strings attached. The only requirements were that at the start of the experiment […]
