Why don’t people want free money? The uncertainty around universal basic income

Gwynne Dyer’s latest book is Growing Pains: The Future of Democracy (and Work).

There is a remarkable lack of enthusiasm for free money.

A recent poll asked people in the work force to rank their preferences: a higher minimum wage; legally enforced profit-sharing by employers; direct government subsidies to wages; and a universal basic income (UBI). Most of them put UBI in last place. That’s not really surprising. People who cannot imagine a different economic environment are naturally reluctant to break the link between work and compensation. But if we are moving toward a future where work is not available for half […]

Why don’t people want free money? The uncertainty around universal basic income – The Globe and Mail

First I want to say that I support many forms of UBI, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t. I am not against the concept, I just question a lot of the motives.

My position on this is that you must first and foremost create enough to support yourself and your life. YOU need to exert enough energy to keep yourself alive.

For some reason another person is paying you to juggle numbers, if that is what you want to do, and they are willing to pay you then go for it. I don’t see that as a negative,If doing that […]

Thread: Universal Basic Income – Pros / Cons

Re: Universal Basic Income – Pros / Cons

Then the bird story was far too removed from this discussion to have relevance.

There will be a temporary rise, adjustment, and re-normalization in the economy – inflation adjustments will account for cost of living rise. We aren’t taling about taking away work done – I think work still needs to happen, but a UBI would have to depend on a shift toward work automation – which we are starting to see right now. I do agree with you that if no one ever had to work, […]

Five Star Movement and Lega unveil coalition agreement to form right-wing Italian government

The far-right Lega (formerly the Northern League) and the protest Five Star Movement presented a 58-page coalition agreement in Rome on Thursday. It is the programme of a reactionary government with semi-fascist characteristics.

Both parties explicitly confirmed this in the coalition agreement. The agreement states, “The government’s actions will be based on a programme to reduce the debt burden.”

To achieve this, tax rates on the wealthy are to be radically cut. A so-called “flat tax” at […]

The rich aren’t actually as scary as you’re making them out to be

I’m under no illusions that this is an easy sell, but guess what makes it an even harder sell

Making the rich out to be impossible to beat so we might as well never try to control the narrative I’m sick and tired of my side ceding the messaging battle to the other side because it’s too hard/they’re not to be trifled with/etc. Most things worth doing aren’t easy We should do them anyway and start this conversation now They’re worse, […]

I decided to take some time and run some numbers on this. My numbers are not absolute as I used Google and used what LOOKED like official numbers. They may be off to some degree or they may be absolutely wrong. So once again, I am not saying these numbers are the end all to be all. With that disclaimer out of the way, here is what I came up with.

First, I started with the assumption that this basic income(BI) is only for those who are 18 and over. This is because children should be raised […]
