Oakland’s basic-income program could face a legal challenge over the city limiting participation to those who are Black, indigenous or people of color.

The city unveiled plans in March for a basic-income program that will provide $500 a month to 600 low-income residents for at least 18 months. Qualifying participants will be chosen by lottery. The program will initially focus on residents of East Oakland, which has been hard hit in the pandemic.

NEW DELHI: The Centre has deferred the implementation of the four labour codes , originally due on April 1, as several state governments have still not finalised the relevant rules , giving more time to companies to realign their salary structures in line with the new legal provisions.
The delay, however, will adversely impact migrant workers and gig workers, including workers engaged with platforms like Ola and Uber, who will now have to wait longer to receive benefits that were to flow to them under the new law.
