IMF Joins The Choir Singing The Holistic Praises Of Higher Taxes

The IMF wants predistributive and redistributive policies. The center of the alleged holistic approach is of course higher taxes. Preference For Tax Progressivity Giving Everyone a Fair Shot

The IMF wants to Give Everyone a Fair Shot . The COVID-19 pandemic is intensifying the vicious circle of inequality. To break this pattern and give everyone a fair shot at prosperity, governments need to improve access to basic public services—such as health care (including vaccination) and education—and strengthen redistributive policies. For most countries, this would require raising additional revenue and improving the efficiency of spending. Holistic Approach

Why cities are experimenting with giving people cash payments

Why cities are experimenting with giving people cash payments

Inside the hillside church where she works part time as custodian, Ana Vanegas-Rivera rests on a wooden bench and pulls out her phone wallet. She holds up a blue debit card, similar to the others in her wallet, minus her name or any issuing bank.

The card belongs to Chelsea, a blue-collar city outside Boston that is using it to give cash to around 2,000 low-income residents during a pandemic that has disproportionately hit its Latino-majority population. Every month the card is reloaded with between $200 and $400, depending on family size, allowing recipients to spend the money as they […]

Oakland’s basic-income plan could face legal challenge

Oakland’s basic-income program could face a legal challenge over the city limiting participation to those who are Black, indigenous or people of color.

The city unveiled plans in March for a basic-income program that will provide $500 a month to 600 low-income residents for at least 18 months. Qualifying participants will be chosen by lottery. The program will initially focus on residents of East Oakland, which has been hard hit in the pandemic.

“Guaranteed income is one of the most promising tools for systems change, racial equity and economic mobility we’ve seen in decades,” Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said at a […]

(AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli) As the economy emerges from the wreckage of the coronavirus pandemic , mayors and county officials across the United States are launching experiments to test the viability of universal basic income as a way to ensure economic stability.

Two new guaranteed income projects in California have stirred debate over who should be eligible for such benefits, whether they truly advance economic equality, and what lessons policymakers weighing broader programs can learn […]

Tomorrow's Economy Will Be Very Different To Today's, So Let's Start Talking About What It Should Look Like

IMAGE: getty A few days ago, thanks to my algorithmic recommendations — not from the sources I usually read, but selected on the basis of subject matter of interest to me — I came across an article about a 57-year-old American who after being released following a 37-year jail term, was asked about his impressions of something as commonplace as a smartphone, or the internet.

The man entered prison at the age of 20, in 1983, when a cell phone weighed more than a kilo and was bigger than a brick, and when no one outside military or very academic […]

Election 2021 Issue brief: Universal Basic Income

Election 2021 Issue brief: Universal Basic Income

In the election debate on Tuesday evening, the topic of Universal Basic Income came up in the discussion. It’s an issue that can unite people across the political divides and yet divide those within the same ideological camps.

Those who support a basic income see it as a way of transforming society. They believe that the current system is not giving sufficient income security for enough people in society and that the system of conditional means-tested social security does not provide adequate support with appropriate dignity. There is no doubt that there are many issues at the moment that mean […]

Rally protests education reform

Rally protests education reform

Teachers, students and parents spent an hour of their spring break Wednesday doing loops around the Manitoba Legislative Building — with car horns blaring — in protest of sweeping reforms to the K-12 public school system.

Among the hundreds of drivers and passengers who hitched rides to a honk-a-thon against the Education Modernization Act was a protester carrying a homemade report card for Premier Brian Pallister; it bore a giant red “F.”

Manitoba unveiled Bill 64, which would replace elected school boards with a centralized authority of government appointees, two weeks ago.“This (legislation) is not a modernization of education; it hurts […]

Govt defers labour codes as states fail to finalise rules

NEW DELHI: The Centre has deferred the implementation of the four labour codes , originally due on April 1, as several state governments have still not finalised the relevant rules , giving more time to companies to realign their salary structures in line with the new legal provisions.
The delay, however, will adversely impact migrant workers and gig workers, including workers engaged with platforms like Ola and Uber, who will now have to wait longer to receive benefits that were to flow to them under the new law.
Since labour is a concurrent subject under the Constitution, […]
