Activists gather for March for Basic Income

Basic Income Rally on the Boston Common Activists gathered in over 40 cities across the world Saturday to advocate for Universal Basic Income, or UBI, at the second annual March for Basic Income.

“Universal Basic Income is where every American citizen would be able to receive a simple income of anywhere from $500 to $2,000 a month regardless of your means,” said Melissa Lin, Massachusetts state lead for the Humanity First collective. “The point is that everyone deserves to start with an economic floor, and that’s not there right now.”

About 150 people gathered on the Boston Common and included 17 […]

RYAN MacRAE: Not only is basic income necessary, it's also sustainable, achievable

Could there become a time when all our basic needs are paid for by the government? That’s the question many economists and politicians around the world are starting to explore. SUBMITTED PHOTO RYAN MacRAE

Canada has been well overdue for an expansion of its social security. According to the most recent (pre-pandemic) statistics from Statistics Canada, 3.2 million Canadians still live below the national poverty line.

The federal Liberals’ anti-poverty strategy will aim to cut this number in half by 2030, but this is simply too low of a bar.The Latin American Mission Program has consistently called for the complete […]

Martin Lewis issues ‘devastating’ warning to millions of people across the UK with a savings account

Martin Lewis has issued a warning to millions of savers across the UK.

The money-saving expert took to social media after National Savings & Investments (NS&I) announced plans to slash the interest it pays on many of its savings accounts – including Income Bonds, Direct Saver and Premium Bonds prize funds.

The Treasury-backed provider , which has 25 million customers, said the rate reductions will mean it aligns its savings products against the rates offered by the banks and building societies. It has seen high customer demand as its products have climbed up the "best buy" tables in recent months, at a […]

What Labour can learn from new RSA polling on values, welfare and UBI

What Labour can learn from new RSA polling on values, welfare and UBI

Values matter: what we and those around us hold dear is one of the biggest predictors of political behaviour, especially as identities become more complex and more self-authored. That is why Labour’s new general secretary David Evans has been a strong advocate for the ‘values model’ of understanding political behaviour. This splits the public into three broad tribes: ‘settlers’, social conservatives who are interested in economic and cultural security and the local; ‘prospectors’, concerned with appearances and social status; and ‘pioneers’, society’s innovators concerned with personal development and non-material goals such as learning and personal development.

As a fallout of the negative impact of COVID-19 and to guarantee at least basic income security and access to essential health care for all in 2020 alone, Nigeria and other developing countries should invest approximately $1.2 trillion – on average 3.8 per cent of their GDP, says International Labour Organization (ILO).

How the Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act could end poverty in the U.S.

How the Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act could end poverty in the U.S.

Earlier this month, Congress failed to pass Republicans’ $300 billion coronavirus economic relief bill. Democrats refused to support the measure — in part because it was too small, and in part because it included liability protections for businesses, which Democrats fear will allow corporations to endanger worker health during a national health crisis. The collapse of negotiations could mean no economic relief till after the November elections — an avoidable disaster at a time when 13 million Americans remain out of work and unemployment is at 8.4%. More than a third of small business owners say they will have […]

Germany begins trial for universal basic income

With the social and financial damage COVID-19 has done to worldwide economies, Germany will experiment with universal basic income over a three year period with 120 volunteers. The experiment will be conducted by the German Institute for Economic Research and funded by 140,000 individuals’ private donations.

Germany will provide the citizens a monthly stipend of €1,200, or about $1,430, which is just above the country’s poverty level. These citizens will be compared to 1,380 other German citizens not receiving universal basic income (UBI).

According to Business Insider, BUI is “the idea that a government should pay a lump sum of money […]

Scarcity, Abundance and Universal Basic Income

Scarcity, Abundance and Universal Basic Income

Imagine living in a arid environment that cannot sustain many animals or vegetation. You’re in a small community that uses a mix of farming and harvesting for food resources. It’s also over 100 miles to get to any other village, by foot due to the bad terrain. In this environment, you all manage to get just enough food and water to keep everyone alive and relatively healthy given the circumstances. Yet in the last drought several people in the community died, luckily this year isn’t quite as bad.

Scarcity

It likely goes without saying, but in these types of […]
