Representative Image The World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked India 140th among 156 countries in its 2021 gender gap index, a drop of 28 places from 2020. In this context, the gap between educational attainment of Indian men and women has widened against global trends, even as access to education has improved. Labour force participation of women has worsened during the Covid pandemic. From a peak of 31.8% in 2005, this fell to its lowest of 9.4% in September-December 2021. At 21.9%, the urban female unemployment rate is far higher than male unemployment (11.7%).
