As a retired midsize company president, I can assure you that boards of directors expect/reward management for lesser employees per unit of output, not more jobs.
The ‘why’ is simple. Using my own manufacturing company metrics of our “fully absorbed benefits” for our factory workers: When it exceeded 50 percent of their average wage (healthcare costs were 37 percent of the 50 percent, with vacation, sick days, leave, holidays, etc., the balance), we accelerated our employee cost/expense reduction planning and strategies to reduce employment levels.
