Resolving $200M Ontario basic income class action lawsuit could take ‘years’: lawyer

The lead lawyer in a class-action lawsuit seeking millions for the early termination of Ontario’s basic income pilot program admits it could be several more years before the matter is resolved.

Cavalluzzo LLP lawyer Stephen Moreau says the fact that the province agreed to hand over $320,000 to cover legal fees on Tuesday “the other way” seems to hint that there won’t be any obvious deal coming soon.

“This started five years ago. How long will it take? Possibly more years,” Moreau said.In 2019, four Lindsay, Ont., residents who were signed up for the pilot filed a $200 million class-action lawsuit […]

Texas Supreme Court orders Harris County not to make payments under guaranteed income program

The Texas Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a ruling barring Harris County from launching a guaranteed income program that is currently being challenged by Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The decision comes just days after Houston Judge Ursula Hall rejected Paxton’s arguments that the Uplift Harris program, which distributes monthly wages to more than 1,900 low-income residents, is unconstitutional.

“If the program includes a public benefit, it does not violate the constitution,” Houston Landing said.Paxton’s lawyers argued that taxpayer money must be used in the public interest for a general benefit. TEXAS LEGISLATURE CHALLENGES ‘LOTTERY SOCIALISM’, URGES STATES TO DECIDE ON UNIVERSAL […]

Texas Supreme Court Puts Harris County’s Guaranteed Income Scheme On Hold

The Texas Supreme Court has issued a temporary administrative stay on Harris County’s guaranteed income scheme that Attorney General Ken Paxton is arguing violates state law.

Paxton sued Harris County at the beginning of the month for its $20.5 million federally-funded basic income program called “Uplift Harris.”

The program aimed to provide $500 monthly for 18 months to nearly 1,900 Harris County families living 200 percent below the poverty line. The Texas Constitution forbids “any county, city, town or other political corporation or subdivision of the State… to grant public money or thing of value in aid of, or to any individual.”According […]

Texas, AG Ken Paxton ‘trying to bully Harris County’ over guaranteed income program, Lina Hidalgo says

Commissioner Rodney Ellis, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, and Barbie Robinson discuss the guaranteed basic income program. The Texas Supreme Court sided with Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday morning to block Harris County’s guaranteed income program to low-income residents.

But before the decision was made, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo appeared on Houston Matters and spoke to Michael Hagerty about the importance of the program. She also said that she anticipated the Supreme Court siding with Paxton, but the debate was about whether Harris County should claw back the checks.

"My heart breaks for these families," she said. "This is […]

Houston-Area Program to Give $500 Monthly Payments to Some Residents on Hold After Texas Lawsuit

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered Harris County, which includes Houston, to put on hold a guaranteed income program that would provide $500 monthly cash payments to roughly 2,000 residents.

The program has become a target of Republican Texas Attorney General Paxton , who has accused local Democratic leaders of trying to “score political points” through the initiative and filed a lawsuit this month in an effort to block its implementation. The program is the latest rift between state and local leaders in the Houston area, where Democrats in recent years have gained political ground.
