Supercuts and the Future of (Too Many) Jobs

Supercuts and the Future of (Too Many) Jobs

Last week I got my hair cut at Supercuts. The wonderful old-fashioned barber shop that I always go to was closed for their annual vacation week, and I desperately needed a haircut for a big talk I was about to give. So Supercuts it was.

The haircut that I got a Supercuts was fine. The price was low, and the stylist was professional efficient.

The problem was the experience. There was a big line of people wanting to their hair cut, and not enough stylists to do the cutting. This was not due to a lack of barber chairs. There were […]

Guess Who’s Supporting a Guaranteed Income for All Americans

Guess Who’s Supporting a Guaranteed Income for All Americans

IQ-Squared sponsored a debate last Sunday on a “universal basic income” proposal — the idea of giving every American adult $1,000 a month and instantly ending poverty. You can watch the debate here: http://www.intelligencesquaredus.org .

The four debaters were:
–Charles Murray (AEI scholar and a “libertarian”)
–Andrew Stern (former president of a service union and scholar at Economic Security Project) –Jared Bernstein, chief economist for Joe Biden –Jason Furman, former director of Council of Economic Advisors under ObamaNow, you would think that Bernstein and Furman, both social Democrats who worked under the Obama administration, would support a universal income policy […]

More Silicon Valley Elites Endorsing Universal Basic Income Proposal

Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield has joined Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Tesla CEO Elon Musk in endorsing a universal basic income proposal, which would guarantee a minimum cash handout to all Americans.

Doesn’t have to be much, but giving people even a very small safety net would unlock a huge amount of entrepreneurialism. — Stewart Butterfield (@stewart) August 4, 2017 “Now it’s our time to define a new social contract for our generation. We should explore ideas like universal basic income to give everyone a cushion to try new things,” Zuckerberg argued, claiming that he’s unsure Facebook would have […]

Why women (especially) should delay taking CPP

Why women (especially) should delay taking CPP

Senior couple mountain biking on a forest trail, low angle (istock) Women have good reason to worry about retirement finances – they tend to live longer than men, have lower pensions and are more likely to become widowed and need long-term care. That means that for women, in particular, delaying the start of taking their Canada Pension Plan (CPP) retirement benefits from 65 until 70 makes a lot of financial sense .

The mathematical case for delaying CPP is clear: Starting CPP benefits at the age of 70 instead of 65 will increase a person’s CPP pension by 42 per […]

Silicon Valley’s vision of universal basic income is wrong

Silicon Valley's vision of universal basic income is wrong

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is one of the Silicon Valley leaders advocating for a universal basic income to be implemented as a result of automation displacing more workers. (Nam Y. Huh / AP) With figures ranging from 33-year old Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg to 90-year-old Nobel Prize -winning economist Vernon Smith endorsing a universal basic income, the idea may soon enter the U.S. political mainstream. But Americans are being sold on a dangerous version of the UBI, designed as a resource rent rather than a product of social consensus.

Smith recently wrote an op-ed for the Wall Street […]

What to expect when applying for GIS

What to expect when applying for GIS

(Shutterstock) Over the summer we’ve looked at how to deal with Service Canada to get retirement benefits from both Old Age Security (OAS) and the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). As noted here and here , the Government reaches out to qualifying Canadian residents when they reach age 64, in plenty of time to start receipt of benefits at age 65. As the earlier pieces recounted, I received Service Canada letters about both OAS and CPP shortly after I turned 64 this spring.

But what about the third leg of the government retirement benefits stool? That’s the Guaranteed Income Supplement or […]

The Four Challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Four Challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

The evolution of global industries to Industry 4.0 (Rev 4.0) is both exciting and scary. Industry 4.0 is the designated code name for a combination of traditional manufacturing practices and industrial processes with technological capabilities, from automation to AI. From factories becoming self-monitoring to delivery vehicles becoming self-driving. Whilst there are many benefits of Industry 4.0, there are several key challenges that lie ahead. Cybersecurity

Having everything attached to everything else in the Internet of things (IoT) is going to monumentally increase the vulnerabilities present in any given network. With more nodes, connections and burden of connectivity, systems are […]
