Perustulo: because Finland’s basic income has disappointed everyone

Bdo not share a common photo! This seemed to be the strategy of the Finnish social minister Pirkko Mattila when he accepted the thin volume on Friday morning. Quickly grabbed the politician after the relationship with the first results of the basic income experiment, gave the investigator Olli Kangas a short hand – and turned immediately. No meticulous handshake for the cameras, no sharing with the report band: the joy seems different.

The Finnish basic income experiment has indeed thrilled people all over the world; In Finland, however, it mainly caused political discussions. In fact, the project has been accompanied […]

How should we judge a universal basic income?

How should we judge a universal basic income?

Some results are in from Finland’s experiment with a universal basic income. Those results leading to the question, well, how should we judge success here? Our view is possibly more than a little idiosyncratic :

A nationwide experiment with basic income in Finland has not increased employment among those participating in the two-year trial, but their general well-being seems to have increased, a report said on Friday.

Whether or not a UBI increases employment isn’t really the point. We know very well how we can decrease unemployment of course – have no benefits at all. Either people get jobs or they […]

Rahul's minimum income guarantee similar to 'garibi hatao', not feasible: Rajiv Kumar (IANS Interview)

New Delhi, Feb 10 Terming Congress President Rahul Gandhis promise of a minimum income guarantee to poor unimplementable, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar says it is similar in nature to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhis ‘garibi hatao slogan.

He says India neither had the kind of fiscal space, nor the kind of complete data needed to implement the scheme.

Kumar also opposed the idea of Universal Basic Income, often advocated by former Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian, saying he favoured incentives for population to work. The NITI Aayog Vice Chairman said the Congress needed to explain to the country how it […]

People on Universal Basic Income sit on their bums. Is anyone surprised?

People on Universal Basic Income sit on their bums. Is anyone surprised?

Caption: What would you do if you were guaranteed free money every month. There’s a fabulous episode of The Simpsons where Springfield holds a “Do What You Feel” festival. Naturally, nobody “feels like” doing any actual hard work, including safely setting up a ferris wheel. Disaster ensues.

Lots of people want stuff but don’t ‘feel like’ actually working for it. Many on the left seem to think that they shouldn’t have to, hence the popularity of “Universal Basic Income”: a fancy name for giving people money for nothing.

Forking over taxpayers’ dosh, no questions asked – exactly what do they think […]

Finland’s Universal Basic Income Experiment Failed To Put More People Back To Work

Finland’s Universal Basic Income Experiment Failed To Put More People Back To Work

Finland’s Social Insurance Institution just released results from a two-year experiment with Universal Basic Income. The plan was simple. Instead of only giving unemployment benefits to people who are out of work, Finland would randomly select 2,000 people who would receive a monthly payment whether or not they worked. This guaranteed income was supposed to encourage people receiving it to take more jobs or even start new businesses. But that’s not what happened. From the official press release : ‘On the basis of an analysis of register data on an annual level, we can say that during the first […]

Vox’s spin on Finland’s Basic Income experiment is about what you’d expect

Vox’s spin on Finland’s Basic Income experiment is about what you’d expect

Friday I wrote about the initial results of Finland’s Universal Basic Income experiment. Though the conclusions so far only involve the first year of the program, Finland’s Social Insurance Institution concluded the experiment failed to do what they hoped, i.e. lead more unemployed people to work. In fact, there was no significant difference in work days per year between the group receiving the $600 monthly payments and the control group who received nothing. Those receiving the cash were one percent more likely to have earnings from self-employment which, as far as an entrepreneurial impact goes, is barely perceptible and […]

Finland Basic Income Trial Was Successful

Finland Basic Income Trial Was Successful

Criticizers of UBI in general and some others labeled the Finland’s basic income experiment as a “failure” because it didn’t boost employment, but it succeed at what we want it to do, secure people financially in the years of automation, improve life quality, eradicate poverty and boost entrepreneurship, so in these terms, the experiment was successful.

“Our results weren’t that surprising as it kind of confirms what we know from other pilots,” lead researcher at Kela Minna Ylikännö says,
“People’s wellbeing is enhanced when they have some kind of financial security. They feel secure, so they feel better – […]

Free Money for Everyone Sounds Great, But Finland Proves Basic Income is a Bust

Free Money for Everyone Sounds Great, But Finland Proves Basic Income is a Bust

Finland’s universal basic income experiment shows that plans that seek to hand out free money won’t work. | Source: Shutterstock Universal basic income experiments and other plans that seek to distribute free money seem wonderful considering so many people struggle to make ends meet because of their limited incomes.

In the U.S., many legislators have called for federal and or/state governments to trial these economic policies. One recent proposal actually calls for people to receive money from the government even if they are unwilling to work!

As lawmakers and supporters champion such ideas, it would behoove them to look beyond the […]

Commentary on the Green New Deal

Some good commentary on the Green New Deal from Steve Horwitz on Facebook : As with every other major spending program like this one, including the original New Deal, this is not about what it claims to be about on the surface. The “green” part of this is just rhetorical cover for the long-standing progressive wish list of ways to remake the economic order in the ways they see fit. Just as the New Deal was not about “recovery” but about “reform” and a supposed third way between socialism and capitalism, the GND is more of the same. And […]

Would basic income for everyone work better than Universal Credit – this is what some of the experts are saying

Would basic income for everyone work better than Universal Credit - this is what some of the experts are saying

The government is being urged to consider a new system which will see the end of benefits.

Known as ‘basic income’, its an idea whereby each person gets paid a basic income – whether they’re in work or not.

While it may sound far fetched, it has already been tried in countries such as Finland and Canada. The Netherlands and parts of the USA have also shown interest into the scheme. And now there is a call for pilot schemes to be tried in parts of the UK – including replacing child benefits and giving children aged four and under an income as […]
