Delaware pilots guaranteed income: New mothers get $1,000 a month

Delaware’s program is different in that the money is just going to those who are pregnant with low-income in targeted ZIP codes. The state’s program is being funded with a combination of federal pandemic relief dollars and staff from the state Division of Public Health.

The initiative is being overseen by the Delaware Healthy Mother and Infant Consortium , whose mission is to reduce infant and maternal mortality and improve the health of new moms and babies.

Delaware’s infant mortality rate was one of the highest in the nation two decades ago, but efforts to reduce it have paid off, […]

TAMS: New administrative and IT systems delaying approvals

New administrative and information technology (IT) support systems are part of the reason for the delay in approvals of applications under the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS).

After giving cash to 820 unhoused people, Denver Basic Income Project says the initiative is working

I’ve probably written this too many times, but…

The idea that giving poor people money makes their lives better has never been in doubt. It’s been tested over and over again, always with the same result. You can run another 1000 test projects to see if giving poor people money makes them less poor, and the result will be positive, pretty much every time. I don’t know why it keeps being reported as if this is news. It isn’t. Pouring water over someone makes them wet, showering poor people with money makes them less poor.

The question for UBI isn’t whether […]

Basic Income Worth Honest Study

Basic Income Worth Honest Study

Commentary:

The idea of a “universal basic income” (UBI) has been around a long time. Most supporters are broadly on the left of the political spectrum, but many conservative thought leaders including Charles Murray as well as Reagan officials like James Baker and George Schultz, have also been willing to consider the idea.

The idea behind UBI is simple: replace welfare payments to the poor with cash payments to empower the poor to manage their government benefits. Welfare programs have a bunch of hoops and phase-outs that can often disincentivize going from welfare to work. One problem with UBI (as […]
