The Effects of a Universal Basic Income During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Kenya

To what extent do cash transfers cushion the blow to poor families during hard times? Taking advantage of a pre-existing large-scale evaluation of a universal basic income project in Kenya, researchers measured how different types of cash transfers impact recipients’ income, reported well-being, food security, mental health, and social interaction in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying agricultural seasonality. Researchers found that although the income gains from small businesses started before the pandemic were wiped out, transfer recipients experienced modestly better food security and physical and mental health than those who had not received transfers, along […]

Minister of Social Affairs and Health Aino-Kaisa Pekonen. Helsingin Sanomat investigates claims made by the opposition Finns Party that the government’s proposal to provide an additional 75 euros per month to recipients of social assistance payments for the rest of this year will instead unfairly benefit immigrants and single men.

State benefits agency Kela pays the basic social assistance payment "to individuals and families whose income and assets do not cover their essential daily expenses".

HS writes that when Minister of Social Affairs and Health Aino-Kaisa Pekonen (Left) introduced the proposal to Parliament, she said the additional payment was intended to […]

Why Does Civil Unrest Mystify Whites?

Why Does Civil Unrest Mystify Whites?

Andrew Yang

Last fall I was contacted by the Andrew Yang campaign to see if I would speak at one of his events. I was not a part of the “Yang Gang” but one or more on my talks on the concept of the Universal Basic income had come to the attention of his campaign and they wanted to get me in front of their supporters. I couldn’t be in New York last October, when they first wanted me, then we rescheduled later in the primary season, but he concluded his bid for the presidency before that date arrived.

I was […]

Supervisor Haney Floats a Universal Basic Income Program for SF

Supervisor Haney Floats a Universal Basic Income Program for SF

Matt Haney is calling for a San Francisco guaranteed income, but did not say how much money people would get, and merely hoped the funding would come from a “private philanthropist foundation or something else.”

The idea of a universal basic income has always been kind of like the whole six Californias gambit — a pet project of contrarian venture capitalists that would surely never happen. But the guaranteed income idea has become more mainstream in the last year or so, primarily when presidential candidate Andrew Yang picked it up and gave it the more palatable brand name of a […]

Social security According to basic Finns, the coronal supplement of income support “flows” to immigrants and single men – HS went through the allegations

Basic Finns criticize the government’s proposed “corona supplement” for income support. According to statistics requested by HS, about one in three recipients of income support speaks a language other than Finnish or Swedish as their mother tongue, and one in three recipients is a single man.

Opposition party Basic Finns reviewed on Tuesday and Wednesday the government’s proposal for a corona supplement of 75 euros to be paid to persons receiving income support during the rest of the year. Temporary support costs the state about 60 million euros.

Minister of Social Affairs and Health Aino-Kaisa Pekonen (left) said in his introductory […]

How a basic income experiment helped these Kenyans weather the Covid-19 crisis

How a basic income experiment helped these Kenyans weather the Covid-19 crisis

Several years ago, researchers in Kenya decided to study the effects of a universal basic income (UBI) trial on people’s wellbeing. Some 6,000 recipients in a 12-year trial beginning around 2017 received 75 cents a day — not much, but enough, their research found, for people to be less food-insecure and more likely to start a business. Others received payments for just two years (that ended in December 2019), and still others received a lump sum payment.

In early 2020, the coronavirus hit. In response, governments like Kenya’s imposed harsh lockdowns that sought to prevent the virus’s spread but that […]
