AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Austin has become the first Texas city to approve a pilot program that will provide a guaranteed income to qualified residents.

The program will give 85 families $1,000 per month for a year. City Council on Thursday voted to approve a contract for a non-profit to manage the funding.

Austin City Council members approved a contract for administration of the guaranteed income program in an 8-1 vote. (Ben Thompson/Community Impact Newspaper) Austin is set to begin a one-year trial run of a program that will provide dozens of local families with $1,000 monthly checks following an 8-1 City Council vote.

The $1.18 million guaranteed income pilot was initially funded in Austin’s fiscal year 2021-22 budget approved last August, and a contract for the finalized program first appeared on council’s agenda in April. The program’s funding, including the monthly payments and administrative costs, comes from the city equity office’s budget.

NEW ORLEANS — The Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families (OYF) today announced the launch of the New Orleans Guaranteed Income Program through a $500,000 grant from Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI).

The City of New Orleans is the first recipient of the MGI funding to prioritize payments to young people. The program will serve 125 young people between the ages of 16-24 who are disconnected from work and school. They will receive a monthly cash payment of $350 for the next 10 months.
