The robots are coming for your job—but not all of it

Reports of machines completely replacing New York workers are greatly exaggerated, a think-tank’s new study argues. The report by the Center for an Urban Future determined that automation will affect nearly every job in the city in the next few decades—but will only outright erase a few thousand of them. What will save the humans? New York’s large number of "social, cognitive, and technical" positions, the study found .

Also, robots and computers will only take over specific tasks rather than entire occupations, and their growth will be slowed by financial, political and social pressures. The think tank suggested that […]

Let’s stop pretending. Automation will annihilate jobs and this is goddamn fantastic.

Let’s stop pretending. Automation will annihilate jobs and this is goddamn fantastic.

The creator of jobs is innovation and the destroyer of jobs is automation — there is no natural reason for these to balance each other out

I’ve been seeing a lot of op-ed type articles recently about how automation will not have a net negative impact on jobs, but may actually create more of them. See here , here and here .

In the long term, this is ridiculous. It all boils down to the fundamental economic equation of supply equals demand. Another way of saying this is: we must consume as much as we produce. In the equation below, […]

The Future of Work, a History

The Future of Work, a History

announced, “MARCH OF THE MACHINE MAKES IDLE HANDS,” with the subhead: “Prevalence of Unemployment With Greatly Increased Industrial Output Points to the Influence of Labor-Saving Devices as an Underlying Cause.”

What these alarming words referred to was the abundance of goods being produced in the roaring plants, mills and farm fields of 1920s America. According to a variety of statistics cited and charted by the Times , what Americans could now make was beginning to outstrip what they could consume, to the point of diminishing employment.

“More and more the finger of suspicion points to the machine,” the Times reporter, Evan […]

How automation can reinvent and boost the job market

How automation can reinvent and boost the job market

With Machines becoming smarter and smarter every day, the debate around Artificial Intelligence and job market have only become bigger. While some day-to-day mundane job functions might become obsolete, there would more job roles are being created to enhance the productivity and creativity of humans. This impending paradigm shift in industry represents a colossal opportunity, as it will require many humans to implement and adapt burgeoning AI and automation technology to current systems.

Automation has great potential in applications (and creating jobs) across industries

Machines can lift heavier loads, undertake more perilous tasks, and do so around the clock […]

Pushing the limits of automation in business processes

Pushing the limits of automation in business processes

Businesses cannot afford to ignore the riches represented in their human capital: those fallible creatures with their unique ability to dare and to dream, to intuit and take risks and, above all, to recognise when they are headed towards catastrophe Last summer saw a grim landmark in the history of artificial intelligence: the first death caused by an autonomous vehicle. A Tesla Model S, operating on full autopilot, crashed into the back of a truck on a Florida highway, killing the human “driver”.

According to the company’s blog, the cause of this tragic accident was the AI’s inability to pick […]

To resist the robots, invest in people

STEPHEN GROFF Widespread automation has yet to come to Asia’s developing economies; but it will soon enough, and
governments would do well to start preparing their workforces now. In addition to appropriate tax and
labor-market policies, publicly provisioned vocational and skills-training programs will play a crucial
role.
MILAN/NEW YORK – Most of the global economy is now subject to positive economic trends: unemployment is falling, output gaps are closing, growth is picking up, and, for reasons that are not yet clear, inflaMANILA – A knitting factory in Bangladesh brings together the past, present, and future. The IFS report sees humans being potentially priced out of work by automation

Image: The IFS report sees humans being potentially priced out of work by automation A report for the economic think tank urges "extremely careful" monitoring of wage rates over the coming years as statutory pay goes up and employers look to cut costs.

The National Living Wage, which applies to workers aged 25 and over, is set to rise to £7.83 per hour from April from a current rate of £7.50.

Current ambitions will see it hit 60% of median wages in 2020 – around £8.56 if forecasts prove accurate. Could robots replace human workers? The IFS said those set to […]

Rise of the robots: Automation risk to more jobs as minimum wage increases warns IFS

Restaurant waiters are actually at lower risk from automation than some other occupations, the IFS said (Source: Getty) Higher minimum wage levels could tempt British employers to automate more jobs, risking a rise in unemployment, respected economists at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) will today warn.

In research to be published today, the IFS will call for “extremely careful monitoring” of the effects of government increases to the minimum wage as more jobs which could be replaced by machines fall into the law’s scope.

The proportion of over-25 employees on the minimum wage will have tripled between 2015 and 2020 […]

Minimum wage increases place workers at risk from automation, think tank warns

Jobs such as cashiers are vulnerable to automation. Increases in the minimum wage could place workers at risk from automation, a think tank has warned.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies called for a monitoring of the minimum wage rate as employers look to save money by automatising aspects of their business.

For employees aged 25 and over the minimum wage is currently £7.50, rising to £7.83 in April, with the rate scheduled to reach 60% of median wages in 2020 – around £8.56.Those set to be brought within the minimum wage net in 2020 are likely to be from the most […]
