25,000 robots and counting: Welcome to the fastest-growing segment of industrial automation

Collaborative robots, usually called cobots , are now the fastest growing segment of industrial automation and are expected to make up 34% of all industrial robot sales (a ten-fold increase) by 2025. Universal Robots (UR), the company that helped pioneer the market — one that was largely nonexistent a decade ago — just announced its 25,000th cobot sale.

The news coincides with the start of the International Manufacturing Technology Show ( IMTS ), which began today.

Universal Robots has a 60 percent share of the cobot market, but rapid maturity in the sector has attracted plenty of rivals. In a topsy […]

Artificial intelligence and automation could make hundreds of thousands of jobs in West Yorkshire 'obsolete' - according to report

John Baruch is attempting to get the next generation ready for the “fourth industrial revolution” ARTIFICIAL intelligence and the increase in robotics could mean a third of jobs in West Yorkshire would be obsolete in just two decades’ time.

A report put together by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority warns more than 400,000 jobs in the region are at risk of advances in technology and automation.

The rise of AI is mirroring the Industrial Revolution in more ways than one

The maxim “the future is here, it’s just not equally distributed” could soon hold new meaning after a recent study found AI is set to significantly contribute to GDP – but only for those countries that can implement it early.

The research, conducted by the McKinsey Institute , aimed to forecast the global impact of AI. Researchers analysed current trends in AI development and deployment around the world and predicted the technology has the potential to contribute an additional $13 trillion to the global economy by 2030. This translates to a 16 per cent increase on today’s cumulative […]

Over the past ten years or so, a number of books and studies, and even more articles in the popular and business press, have warned of an imminent wave of automation in the advanced economies of North American and Europe. This wave, they argue, threatens to wipe out […]

Automation and employment

Automation and employment

Everywhere you turn, tasks traditionally being performed by humans are now the target of computerized automation.

It is our view this is not good at all. In fact, we think it is a disaster in the making, especially for people who do not have advanced education degrees or technical/trade expertise for the jobs of the future.

We know we risk being called Luddites this Sunday morning. A luddite is a person who dislikes technology, and the origins of the term are believed to be a reference to individuals in the 1800s who opposed technology in the textile industry and destroyed weaving […]

Pin It Share Email Print Late-night news comic John Oliver recently gave a 20-minute talk about President Donald Trump’s use of tariffs. As always, he was very funny, but he made a few mistakes in his analysis of trade.The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) would like to help provide a better understanding of the issue. To start with, Oliver said that Americans will pay for the tariffs imposed by the president. That’s not actually true. In fact, it’s basic economics that every tax is paid partly by the producer and […]

Robots 'could make 400,000 West Yorkshire jobs obsolete in 20 years', says report

The study suggested the changes will not necessarily mean a loss of jobs overall, but warned inequality could get worse. Robots and automated technology threaten to make more than a third of jobs in West Yorkshire obsolete within 20 years, a report has warned.

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority study said more than 400,000 jobs in the region are at risk, with low-skilled and manual work potentially worst affected by automation.

The study suggested the changes will not necessarily mean a loss of jobs overall, but warned inequality could get worse as “lower paid workers (are) likely to be […]

Artificial intelligence (AI) could add $13 trillion to worldwide economic output by 2030, equivalent to about 1.2 per cent of additional GDP growth a year, according to a new report. The study by McKinsey Global Institute has predicted that about 70% of companies would implement some form of AI by the end of the next decade, with frontrunners set to reap a large financial benefit.

Early adopters of the technology could double their cashflow, with laggards suffering a 20 per cent decline.

Overall, AI could deliver $13 trillion in additional global economic activity by 2030, putting its contributions to growth on […]

Exclusive Q&A: Which Retail Jobs Are Safe From A Robot Takeover? Featured

Retail, hospitality and other service-oriented industries have been seen as relatively immune to the job-killing effects of robotics, automation and AI. But as these technologies grow more sophisticated, retail’s resistance is weakening. Futurist Martin Ford, author of Rise Of The Robots: Technology And The Threat Of A Jobless Future , notes that robots are already reducing (or eliminating) the number of humans needed to do many jobs, including:

• Warehouse work;
• Checking in-store inventory;
• Providing customer service; and • Staffing points of sale.In an exclusive interview with Retail TouchPoints , Ford identifies the advances in robotics and AI […]
