Covering Workers in a Robust Economy

Covering Workers in a Robust Economy

The rise of automation and the gig-economy are still no threat when it comes to traditional work. (Photo credit: Pixaabay, user skeeze) The rise of automation, coupled with the gig-economy, has left many fearing an automated apocalypse with robots displacing human. The truth is, well, we’re not quite there yet.

Yes, in certain jobs humans are being replaced by automated computers, but in the U.S. workers are still needed to perform jobs and fill positions. Human capital is still a valuable investment for companies across the country.

While the economy is growing, there are untold stories behind employment numbers that can […]

Making a case for artificial intelligence in the legal profession

Making a case for artificial intelligence in the legal profession

Automation can help – not hinder – a sector which still needs the human touch

“In the past year or so we’ve seen the legal market’s understanding of the strengths as well as limitations of AI mature in a very constructive way.” Did you hear the one about the affordable yet efficient human lawyer and its robot counterpart? One is complete myth and will never happen while the other might be just around the corner thanks to artificial intelligence (AI).

I couldn’t help myself. Everybody loves a silly lawyer joke but the joke may be on us because the lawyer […]

Public overwhelmingly rejecting robots, finds UK Robotics Week report

Public overwhelmingly rejecting robots, finds UK Robotics Week report

With UK Robotics Week upon us, UK-RAS has released a survey trumpeting public support for the technology. However, the results reveal the exact reverse, says Chris Middleton.

A fifth of UK adults believe we are co-existing in harmony with robots, according to a new survey, while nearly one-quarter (24 percent) believe that there is much more scope for robots to be included in everyday society.

Over one-third of people (35 percent) would feel comfortable with having robots around the house, it says. The research, commissioned and given a positive spin by UK-RAS – the umbrella organisation for UK robotics and autonomous […]

Auto to See More Robots

Auto to See More Robots

Kristin Dziczek is vice president of the Industry, Labor, & Economics group of the Center for Automotive Research Automotive is one of the most highly-automated industries in the world, and it has been a leading force in expanding the use of industrial automation for decades. In fact, the first industrial robot in production was a Unimation UNIMATE that GM installed on a die-casting line in New Jersey in 1962.

Developments such as the Stanford Arm and MIT’s Silver Arm that were initially deployed in automotive led to widespread proliferation of industrial automation in the US auto industry throughout the 1970s […]

Artificial intelligence will make no job safe. We must provide for everyone’s needs, regardless of employment

Artificial intelligence will make no job safe. We must provide for everyone's needs, regardless of employment

To the editor: I’m glad that some folks at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis can see that automation is causing an employment crisis in America . But I am disappointed by the suggested solution to train more people in robotics and artificial intelligence, as if those fields could ever provide enough work to replace all the other jobs people do.

The power of artificial intelligence is such that very few jobs will be safe. The truth is that automation is currently being driven less by a desire to make people’s lives easier or better than by a desire […]

How the three phases of automation dictate human employment

How the three phases of automation dictate human employment

I have faith in automation in all its forms and look forward to the day when AI and machine learning make it obsolete to work for a buck.

Yet, others worry about a different future, where automation takes over completely and most humans are left on the sidelines and live a life of meager sustenance, subject to technology they cannot hope to master. PDF: Are you migrating to DevOps?

As DevOps is slowly taking over the IT landscape, its vital that IT pros understand it before jumping right into the movement. In this complimentary guide, discover an expert breakdown of […]

Weighing whether there are too many or too few jobs

Weighing whether there are too many or too few jobs

More Jobs Available Illustration by Greg Groesch/The Washington Times more > ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Will there be too few or too many jobs in the future? We are told as a result of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution with endless robots, autonomous vehicles, etc. that there will be far fewer jobs. Yet last week, despite record levels of automation, the Department of Labor announced that the country had reached the point where there were more jobs available than people seeking work.

At the time of the American Revolution, three-quarters of all Americans worked on farms; now it is 1.5 percent. A century […]

According to a new International Monetary Fund research paper , the answer to the above question is yes. As one story on the IMF report put it, “The future of work run by robots appears to be a dystopian march to rising inequality, falling wages and higher […]
