Women are primarily seen as ‘caregivers’ for the family, even when they contribute to the family’s financial needs. Further, their role as caregivers or ‘housewives’ is not measured in economic terms.

Post-independence, various policies, schemes and laws for empowering and recognizing the role of women in society have been implemented.
