India, the nation of over 1.25 billion people, till recently was the fastest growing economy of the world. However, the fact that it is home to the world’s largest poor population is also a reality. As per official government statistics, 22 percent of the population in India lives below poverty line, but as per World Bank estimates the ratio hovers around 30 percent. In a survey conducted during 2011-12, it was observed that nearly half of the Indians survived on less than Rs 38 a day. A very grim scenario indeed.
