Canada’s Justin Trudeau is spearheading an effort to test a universal basic income in Ontario. The expensive trial will run for three years. Canada plans to launch an expensive and controversial experiment. Eligible Ontario households will receive up to $24,000 a year while the government tests the merits of providing a universal basic income.
Basic income proposals are supported by both conservative and liberal intellectuals. The left focuses on the gains that would accrue to the poor while some Republicans believe that it’s an alternative to bloated government infrastructure. Welfare offices currently dot the country and employ thousands of people.
