Italy is currently experiencing a major political crisis. In March, general elections were held , which led to two wins by the anti-establishment and populist 5 Star Movement (M5S), led by Luigi Di Maio, and the far-right and populist League (Lega Nord), led by Matteo Salvini.
The populist ideology is defined as protecting the rights of ordinary citizens. (American President Donald Trump has been called a populist .)
