Political history demonstrated something that troubled our nation’s founders: Republics tended to turn into dictatorships after a majority began using its voting powers to steal the money and property of a wealthier minority.
To this day, Western democracies grapple with balancing freedom against concern for the least fortunate, trying to find the best way to redistribute wealth to the needy without destroying the property rights and the incentives to earn money that are crucial both to freedom and a robust economy.
