According to Rahul Gandhi, it will provide the poorest 20% of India’s households a basic income of Rs 72,000 a year. The Congress chief estimates that 50 million families, or nearly 250 million people, will benefit. Some ballpark estimates suggest the scheme will cost Rs 3 trillion to Rs 4 trillion a year, or about 2% of the Gross Domestic Product.
