Math is a good place to start. If it costs less in startup and maintenance fees to have a robot do the job…. smaller cost is better than bigger cost. McDonalds basically threatened to replace cashiers if minimum wages rose, years ago. And they have started adding in a lot of self-service machines, already, along with Faramir’s mention of smart-cards, so the transition is probably not even going to be that expensive.
If there is a study that shows this is not the case, that basic logic, business science, and is wrong, that would be interesting to see.
