Regional councillors have not only unanimously supported calling on upper-tier governments to implement a basic income guarantee pilot project — they also want that study conducted in Niagara.
A guaranteed basic income program would ensure everyone receives an income sufficient to meet their basic needs. Despite the startup costs, St. Catharines Coun. Laura Ip said it isn’t as expensive as the cost to continue existing programs, especially when the need for additional policing and health care is added to the equation.
