It is striking how many are young able-bodied people, and how much more frequent their visits have become nowadays. They are not always disappointed; many do offer food and cash. The whole scenario is distressing and can seem hopeless, evoking the thought that charity, as Oscar Wilde said, "degrades and demoralises".
