Stockton, California, Basic-Income Experiment Saw Unemployment Decline

It’s a decades-old debate: does it make paying someone alive to make it easier for them to find a job, or does it keep them from looking for work?

One city got its answer on Wednesday: A new report assessed a basic income pilot project in Stockton, California that provided $ 500 monthly grants to 125 residents for two years. The results showed that unemployment among beneficiaries fell from 12% in February 2019 to 8% in February 2020 in the first year of the program.
