Millions for sewer repairs, rental and mortgage assistance, new vehicles and hazard pay for essential city workers highlight Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard’s proposal for how $41 million in American Rescue Plan funds should be spent over the next two years.
The mayor unveiled a list of 22 projects in five categories at Tuesday’s Board of Estimate and Contract meeting. She cited the "critical needs" of complying with a federal consent decree on the city’s troubled sewer system; purchasing new police, fire and sanitation vehicles; enhancing food security; helping struggling renters and homeowners; and boosting small businesses.
