Beginning Friday, Los Angeles residents can apply for a $1,000 monthly payment as part of a 12-month guaranteed income pilot program.
The program, called BIG:LEAP, will provide unconditional instant cash payments to more than 3,200 people for a year.
Officials said there will be no restrictions on how the money can be spent.In a press conference announcing the program Wednesday, Mayor Eric Garcetti called it “the largest guaranteed basic income program anywhere in the United States of America.”The program will begin accepting applications on Friday, before closing its window on November 7.
