Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration has launched a new privately funded program to provide monthly cash payments to a small group of New Orleans teens and young adults, as part of a national pilot program aimed at building a case for guaranteed income. .
The program screened 125 residents ages 16 to 24, and in late April began paying them $350 a month for 10 months. Cantrell said the program is aimed at getting “unrestricted, much-needed cash into people’s pockets at a time when we know our people need it most.”
