Germany will replace long-term unemployment benefits with a basic income

As of January 1 next year, a citizen or basic income should be introduced, which will replace the current long-term unemployment benefit, known as Hartz IV. 557 MPs voted for the compromise proposal, 98 voted against it, and two MPs abstained.

Behind the Bundestag, the proposal and thus the social reform of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government was also approved by the upper house of the parliament, Bundesratin which representatives of the 16 German federal states sit.
