Study Shows Limits of Stockton's Guaranteed Income Program During Pandemic

The city went bankrupt in 2012 but has been recovering and last year began an 18-month trial run of a universal basic income program, providing 125 randomly selected residents with $500 a month. Stockton’s experiment in guaranteed income — which paid more than 100 residents $500 a month with no strings attached — likely improved the recipients’ financial stability and health, but those effects were much less pronounced during the pandemic, researchers found.
