Social grants cost South Africa about R400bn annually and over the coming years will cost about R1-trillion, says finance minister Enoch Godongwana. The R350 social relief of distress grant (SRD) would go a long way if it became a basic income grant, says the UN International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The grant was introduced to assist those in difficulty during the pandemic and was due to end in March. Last year, it was extended to March 2024.
