St. Paul ‘s guaranteed income program, one of the first in the United States, has provided 150 low-income families with newborn children $500 through prepaid debit cards per month since 2020.
On Monday, a completed study by the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Guaranteed Income Research (CGIR) shows that the program overall helped families deal with financial stress during the 18-month stretch from October 2020 through April 2022, and also led to an increase in employment among participating households.
