Why You Won't Find A Guaranteed Basic Income In The Liberal Throne Speech

Blair Gable / reuters Speaker of the House of Commons Liberal Ontario MP Anthony Rota holds a copy of the throne speech in the Senate in Ottawa on Dec. 5, 2019. OTTAWA — Despite the Liberal caucus’ push, and the prime minister saying the throne speech would focus on closing the gaps and caring for Canada’s most vulnerable, a guaranteed basic income won’t be the landmark of the government’s agenda Wednesday.

The throne speech will neither explicitly endorse nor close the door on basic income, two officials told HuffPost Canada. HuffPost is not disclosing the names of the officials because […]

How UBI Can Lead to Increase in Purposeful Work

How UBI Can Lead to Increase in Purposeful Work

Considering last week was Labour Day, a day when we are supposed to celebrate workers and fight for better working conditions, I feel this the perfect time to look again at what basic income could do for our economy.

Basic income. The opinions on the concept range widely with many top economists espousing its virtues and many conservatives seeing the overall cost as insurmountable.

With growing economic inequality and increasing automation of so many of our lower-wage jobs the need for some form of basic income is only going to grow.Whether you are for or against it you have to agree […]

Leeds becomes largest city in UK to call for universal basic income pilot

Leeds has become the largest city in the UK to call for a universal basic income to be trialled, after a vote of the city’s council on Wednesday night.

Councillors from Labour, the Liberal Democrats, and Greens backed a motion on Thursday arguing that the policy could provide financial security to people hit by the coronavirus pandemic. A universal basic income or UBI involves a flat unconditional payment to all citizens whether they are working or not, instead of means-tested benefits. The policy has been widely discussed across the developed world in recent years, and has gained new prominence during […]

St. Paul uses CARES Act money for mayor’s guaranteed income program for struggling families

The Metropolis Council of St. Paul, Minn., voted to launch an experimental $1.5 million assured earnings program for low-income households Wednesday after Mayor Melvin Carter signed onto the group Mayors for a Assured Earnings.

This system will divert $300,000 in CARES Act funding to offer 150 households funds of $500 a month, the Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported. The remainder of the 18-month program will probably be funded by philanthropy, the mayor stated, in line with the Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

Liberals are considering a universal basic income, but economists have tough questions for its proponents

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hasn’t exactly sounded enthusiastic about the idea of a universal basic income. ERNEST DOROSZUK/POSTMEDIA As far as public policy proposals go, a universal basic income couldn’t be simpler. If a Canadian falls below a certain income threshold, they get a cheque from the government.

But even proponents of the policy admit that it will be costly — tens of billions of dollars, even in the most modest estimates — for a plan that would, in their view, be a one-shot poverty-fighting plan. Detractors consider it an expensive sledgehammer, when more precise tools could do the job.
