Poster Mystery Revealed! It's People Who Don’t Vote Telling You How To Vote.

False premise, true conclusion. A group of people claiming to be the artists responsible for those weird anti-Jenny Durkan posters I wrote about yesterday have come forward. They identify themselves as "anarchists who do not vote in democratic elections," who do not work for Cary Moon, and who "despise [Durkan] in the depths of our souls." They claim Durkan sent convicted child molester Robert Childs to a family BBQ where some of their children were present in 2012, and say they will "never forget this despicable, unforgivable act."

These claims are unfounded. Though The Stranger reported activists saying they spotted […]

Nicola Sturgeon accused of ignoring warnings about £12.3 billion cost of 'citizen's income'

Nicola Sturgeon spoke about the proposal at the SNP conference Credit: PA Nicola Sturgeon has been accused of going ahead with plans to investigate a basic “citizen’s income” for every Scot despite a civil service warning that it would be “utterly unaffordable”.

The Scottish Conservatives said a briefing paper obtained under freedom of information revealed that spending on benefits could have to rise by £12.3 billion a year to cover the cost of the scheme.

The document, handed to the First Minister in March, also indicated that paying for it could mean basic income tax rates rising to 50 per cent. The […]

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon after delivering her keynote speech at the Scottish National Party conference at the SEC Centre in Glasgow. (Jane Barlow/PA Wire) THE Scottish Government is being urged to rule out the introduction of a “citizen’s income” scheme, with the Tories claiming the measure is “utterly unaffordable”.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has already said such a move “merits deeper consideration” but the Conservatives claimed a briefing paper given to her more than six months ago warned paying for it could mean basic income tax rates could potentially rise to more than 50%.

The report, obtained by the Tories […]

Seattle mayoral candidate Jenny Durkan says city’s focus on Amazon HQ2 is ‘missing the big story’

Jenny Durkan talks Amazon and automation at Seattle Interactive Conference. (GeekWire Photo / Monica Nickelsburg) For the past month, Seattle’s civic leaders have been trying to make sense of Amazon’s plans to establish a second headquarters elsewhere in North America , and debating what kind of message they are sending to the city’s biggest employers. Seattle mayoral hopeful Jenny Durkan thinks this misses the point.

She believes Amazon — and the technology industry at large — are contributing to a much bigger threat to Seattle’s jobs and economy.

“People are missing the big story,” she said on stage at the Seattle […]

Guest article: Anthony Painter on London and Universal Basic Income

Antony Painter is Director of the Action and Research Centre of the RSA and has been thinking hard about how the idea of a Universal Basic Income (UBI) could be put into effect. This essay, originally published by Centre for London , looks at how UBI might work in the capital.

If London’s economically inactive population were a city, it would be the second largest in the UK. Beyond the glittering towers, London is a city that blends economic dynamism with social lethargy. Despite notable successes in domains such as transport and culture, the strategic institutions established in 2000 […]

The Key Skill That Will Assure Survival in the Coming Second Machine Age

This morning in The Washington Post, I read yet another wrongheaded article, this one titled “ What Silicon Valley Gets Wrong About Universal Basic Income , ” about what to do with all of the unemployed people that the coming wave of robots will displace. The author was right in that the idea of a Universal Basic Income is wrong headed largely because it appears based on a belief that those on this incredibly low income will voluntarily retrain or suddenly become entrepreneurs, off building the next Google. That’s not to say some won’t; clearly there have been those […]

Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez proposed a bill that would allow taxi medallions to cover not one but two vehicles. The number of taxis on city streets could double under a new City Council bill introduced Tuesday that attempts to level the playing field between warring cab and e-hail industries.

The bill would allow taxi medallion owners to add a second vehicle under one medallion. Manhattan Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, the bill’s sponsor, said this would provide an additional stream of revenue for the medallion owner, making the medallion itself a more attractive investment. If e-hail companies like […]

Buttercase on Brexit: Corbyn's policies offer bright side

The result was in and suddenly we could not see David Cameron, Nigel Farage or Michael Gove for dust. Now what?

I was a passionate Remain voter, although I had and still have several issues with many aspects of the way the EU operates.

As someone on the left of politics, I welcome the EU’s commitment to social reforms and internationalism, but I was wary of its bureaucracy and how readily it has fudged key economic principles to accommodate integration ambitions. Chain reaction Since the Nixon shock of 1971 the EU project has refused to address the issue of recycling surpluses […]
