Caravan demonstrates outside Maple Ridge prisons

A caravan of vehicles is expected outfront of Maple Ridge’s two provincial prisons within minutes.

It’s a convoy of demonstrators calling for the release of inmates because of COVID-19.

The group, headed up locally by Vancouver Prison Justice Day committee member Meenakshi Mannoe, is expected to hold #FreeThemAllCaravan action outside Fraser Regional Correctional Centre and in response to growing concern about COVID-19 in prisons across Canada. It’s part of a protest happening today, coast to coast, Mannoe said. It will involve driving past “sites of confinement and hold online caravans to demand freedom for prisoners and migrant detainees subject to the violence […]

$2K per Month for Every American: Andrew Yang Begs Congress to Pass Basic Income

While most of the U.S. remains on lockdown, a few states across the nation are starting to open up businesses and lift restrictions. The COVID protests are just an extension of right-wing climate denial

The COVID protests are just an extension of right-wing climate denial

Protesters gather to protest Pennsylvania’s social distancing protocols. Protests like this have popped up across the country. TNS

The right-wing COVID denial regime that seeks to downplay and dispute the seriousness of the virus didn’t materialize out of the mist.

Rather, it was an easy transition for the climate change denying conservative class that relies on ignorance and pettifogging to muddy the waters on scientific discourse. Ongoing protests around the country have cropped up almost simultaneously, seeking to relax or end the social distancing enacted by various states. These “movements” are assuredly part of an election year program to divide the country […]

It’s easy to imagine artificial intelligence brightening up life in the big city. Self-driving taxis, drones and food-production machines could provide all sorts of conveniences to city dwellers, like shorter commutes and faster package and food delivery. But technologists don’t spend as much time talking about how AI can help small towns.Kevin Scott, Microsoft’s chief technology officer, is an exception. Scott grew up in Gladys, Virginia, a farming community in Campbell County. The county’s population of 54,885 decreased by 252 from the prior year, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. He talks about this part […]

Information key in beating virus

Information key in beating virus

A lab technician testing for Covid-19 Information is key to resolving the Covid-19 crisis. One of the key issues is to know who has been infected through testing.

Kits are available, sometimes in their tens of thousands in a particular country then testing itself can take up to a few days.

President Donald Trump could not, or refused to, answer the question of how many test kits are needed in the US. Indeed, in poor countries, the number of test kits available might only be in the low thousands or even less.So how can countries control and end the spread of […]

An opportunity to take a second look at our priorities and our indifference to the working class

With the country at a crossroads, I am tempted to reproduce what a friend posted the other day. “We fought for temples, we fought for masjids, we fought for statues but we didn’t fight for hospitals,” he wrote. Now, he added, everything is closed but hospitals. He went on to remind us that Indians fought over culture, traditions, caste, history, Aurangzeb and Shivaji –but never fought for science. Ironically, today science appears to be our only savior.” Our elections are fought on rhetoric and over emotional but rarely substantive issues. […]

Why Citizen’s Basic Income could help to transform women’s lives

Why Citizen’s Basic Income could help to transform women’s lives

Virginia Woolf argued that women would benefit from having their own money IT’S infuriating that it has taken a pandemic to put the idea of Citizen’s Basic Income (CBI) firmly on the political agenda, but if it becomes a reality it will be one good outcome of Covid-19, and a particularly good initiative for women.

The suggestion that every citizen would be paid the same basic income by the state regardless of personal circumstances – and that this would replace the benefits system – is not without controversy, but it has many attractions.

The best way to address income distribution is […]

Universal Basic Income is older than you think. Here’s why its time has come at last.

Universal Basic Income is older than you think. Here's why its time has come at last.

Give a Buck is Mashable’s deep dive into Universal Basic Income — an idea gaining currency in a time of pandemic and mass unemployment. Now more than ever, the future depends on whether we can pay the bills.

In the darkest hour of the coronavirus pandemic, in the face of an expected 30 percent unemployment rate and a likely new Great Recession, income-supplementing programs are springing up everywhere. And not just in those slow-to-arrive federal stimulus checks.

Here’s Project 100, a nonprofit, giving $1,000 to 100,000 U.S. families starting this week. There’s Spain’s government planning a basic income that will […]

The politics of poverty

The politics of poverty

In physics, two worlds co-exist: the big and the small. The principles that a falling apple taught Newton apply to apples, but not to the atoms that make them. Time, too, now operates something like this: it ebs as it flows.

In one world, days trickle slowly into the next – wastefully dripping along the edges. In another, decades of decisions and discourse are compressed into days. Whiteboards are now pixels, hospitals have been nationalized, universal basic income is a little more universal.

As life is forced through the narrow neck of an hourglass, Arundhati Roy asks us to think of […]
