#CouldaHadYang Trends as Andrew Yang Supporters Criticize 'Flaming Garbage Pit' Democratic Debate

After the Democratic debate in South Carolina, fans of former presidential contender Andrew Yang have taken to social media to lament the absence of the entrepreneur who dropped out of the primary race earlier this month.

During his run in the primaries, Yang generated a lot of attention especially among young voters, liberal Democrats, and libertarians, many of whom were attracted to his plan to give every adult American $1,000 a month as a universal basic income, in what he called the "Freedom Dividend."

Last September, the entrepreneur tweeted a video of himself crowd surfing at the AAPI Democratic Presidential […]

California lawmaker, former Andrew Yang campaign co-chair, proposes statewide universal income

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGO) — Although tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang has dropped out of the Democratic race for president, his main platform of universal basic income lives on.

Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Cupertino) represents a large part of the South Bay, the heart of the Silicon Valley.

He just introduced AB 2712, proposing a universal basic income for Californians.Perhaps the bill is no surprise, given Low was the national co-chair of Andrew Yang’s presidential campaign, which was based on the idea of giving every American adult $1,000 a month.Low introduced Yang when the candidate was here last month, when he was still in […]

Unconditional basic income made the economy in Kenya’s villages boom

Unconditional basic income made the economy in Kenya’s villages boom

A charity implemented a massive economic stimulus package for rural Kenya: 10,500 households received $1,000 each. A study examined the effects. The result: the entire population benefited from the package and every dollar invested boosted the economy by 2.6 dollars. We can learn a lot from this.

Economists founded the organisation „GiveDirectly“eleven years ago. They wanted to help the population in particularly poor regions of Africa and at the same time examine the economic effects of their activities. The idea is simple: A selected group of people receives money. Just like that and without conditions. The people were simply […]

Countries With Universal Basic Income 2020

Universal basic income (UBI), also known as basic income, is a model that provides all citizens of a country a given sum of money, regardless of their employment status or income. UBI aims to prevent or reduce poverty and increase quality among citizens.

According to the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN), there are five defining characteristics of basic income:

Why Americans Should Fund a Partial Basic Income (OPINION)

Why Americans Should Fund a Partial Basic Income (OPINION)

What would you do if the government gave you $1000 monthly? What would it enable you to do? While this idea may seem far-fetched, its implementation may soon become a reality. After all, the popularity of a Universal Basic Income, or UBI, has risen in the last few months.

A UBI defines the idea of periodic cash payments given to a population with minimal or no requirements to qualify for funding. Supporters of a UBI claim the money will then allow recipients to live above the poverty line and thus improve their standard of living.

In this article, we explain why […]

Yang’s flagship proposal is more commonly referred to as universal basic income (UBI), or just basic income. As Yang describes it, UBI is a “ type of social security that guarantees a certain amount of money to every citizen within a given governed population, without having to […]

Noah Smith: Poverty is about personal stress, not laziness

The constant effort to make ends meet can lead to mistakes in judgment

The nature of poverty in rich countries has changed. The sort of material deprivation common in developing nations is effectively a thing of the past. But millions of Americans lead precarious lives — always on the verge of getting evicted, not knowing where their next meal will come from, or unsure how they’ll be able to generate an income. This precarious existence has replaced abject deprivation as the fundamental market of poverty.

Many believe such lifestyles are the result of low effort or poor individual choices. If people […]

What Insurers Think of the Secure Act

For years, the insurance industry and advocates for guaranteed income products worked to get a fiduciary sanctuary for employer sponsors of defined contribution plans who put annuities in investment menus. They got that sanctuary — or the annuity provider selection safe harbor — in the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act. What happens now?

“I do think the safe harbor will create more interest from plan sponsors and drive uptake of existing options and some innovation,” said Sri Reddy, senior vice president in the retirement and income solutions unit of Principal Financial Group.

“But we are still a ways […]
