Why a Universal Basic Income is a very bad idea

Why a Universal Basic Income is a very bad idea

It is difficult to understand how an intelligent, highly trained man like Richard Di Natale could seriously suggest that Australia should introduce a Universal Basic Income.

It was even more surprising to hear channel 10 television host, Waleed Ali give some credence to the idea on The Project, last night, suggesting it was “no lefto pinky nonsense”.

Natale made his announcement at the National Press Club luncheon this week. For those unsure of it, a UBI is a basic, liveable payment to all citizens without any conditions attached.Economists tell us it could replace all government spending on welfare, as well as […]

Cut bureaucracy to create time for third mission, says EUA head

Man held back by red tape Researchers need to strike a new grand bargain with governments to cut back academic bureaucracy in order to free up time for the social and economic engagement increasingly demanded of universities by states, the president of the European University Association has argued.

Rolf Tarrach was speaking at the organisation’s annual conference in Zurich, which was dominated by sometimes anxious debate about universities’ role in society, the erosion of their public legitimacy and outright threats to academic freedom from governments.

“If we want to do more things for society, we can’t do it by working more […]

'I'm the bloke you ignore in the fourth chair!' Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald accuses Waleed Aly of not paying attention to him on The Project... after the TV host was accused of 'mansplaining' on-air

The Project host Waleed Aly went head-to-head with panellist Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald in a rap battle on Nova 96.9’s Fitzy & Wippa on Friday.

During the light-hearted hip hop contest, Fitzy jokingly accused Waleed, 39, of ignoring him on Network Ten’s current affairs show.

Performing to Rapper’s Delight by The Sugarhill Gang, the radio host said: ‘You’re looking at me with a confused stare, I’m the bloke you ignore in the fourth chair.’ Elsewhere during Fitzy’s rap, the funnyman roasted Waleed over his job as a university lecturer and his absence from social media. When it was Waleed’s turn to respond, he […]

'This is not Egypt': Muslim imam slams Waleed Aly for 'mansplaining' to a fellow panellist on The Project after she questioned him on the Greens welfare policy

A Muslim imam has slammed The Project’s Waleed Aly for being apparently condescending to a female co-host who disagreed with him on a radical Greens welfare policy.

The Gold Logie-winning TV personality and Rachel Corbett were debating the merits of paying every citizen the equivalent of the age pension, or $23,000 a year.

However at one point during the exchange Aly suggested the female panellist didn’t understand Greens leader Richard Di Natale’s universal basic income policy, which is being trialled in Kenya. Plan for universal basic income ignores the value of work

Plan for universal basic income ignores the value of work

Richard di Natale addressing the National Press Club on Wednesday. Photo: Alex Ellinghausen If ever we needed evidence that the Greens don’t expect to be the party of government any time soon, Richard Di Natale’s latest suite of policies provides it. A grab-bag of un-costed ideas, the policy program outlined at the National Press Club on Wednesday would be impossible to implement in government.

While most people were focussed on the proposal to turn the RBA into a retail mortgage-lender, the Greens’ embrace of the Universal Basic Income (UBI) deserves scrutiny.

The UBI is perhaps the most widely supported idea in […]

‘Why is this clown still on air?’ Waleed Aly is slammed for ‘mansplaining’ to a fellow panellist after she questioned a Greens push to give every Australian a $23,000 taxpayer-funded living wage

'Why is this clown still on air?' Waleed Aly is slammed for 'mansplaining' to a fellow panellist after she questioned a Greens push to give every Australian a $23,000 taxpayer-funded living wage

The Project host Waleed Aly has copped criticism for an apparent ‘mansplain’ to a female presenter who disagreed with him on a controversial Greens proposal.

Speaking on Thursday’s show, Aly delivered a passionate editorial praising the value of a proposal from Greens leader Richard Di Natale to give every citizen $23,000.

The taxpayer-funded payment, known as a universal basic income, would be handed out to offset lost wages from jobs being replaced by robots and computers.Fellow presenter Rachael Corbett suggested only those who would lose their jobs due to automation would deserve the payment, but Aly was having none of it.Scroll […]

Anti-establishment and far-right leaders stood firm Thursday in a battle for the upper hand after talks with the president on who can lead a new Italian government fell flat. Five Star Movement (M5S) leader Luigi Di Maio called on right-wing leader Matteo Salvini to ditch coalition partner Silvio Berlusconi, and “change Italy” with the M5S.

Di Maio’s M5S, Italy’s largest single party after picking up just under 33 percent of the vote in last month’s election, is staunchly opposed to working with the 81-year-old media magnate and wants to break up the right-wing coalition that garnered 37 percent of votes […]

Not ‘leftie pinko nonsense’: Waleed Aly on the Greens idea of a universal basic income

Instead Aly explained the proposal during Thursday night’s The Project , telling audiences “up to 5 million Aussies are at risk of losing their jobs over the next decade or so. That’s 40 per cent of our work force” and “pretty soon we’re going to be living in a high-tech robotopia”.

Jobs such as farmers, tradies and truckies were going to be replaced by robots, with only creative industries faring better, as well as “the engineers that make and maintain our new robot overlords”. Italy’s political heavyweights dig in heels at government talks

Italy’s political heavyweights dig in heels at government talks

Italy’s major political players dug in their heels after meeting on Thursday with the president in Rome for talks on who can break the parliamentary deadlock and lead a new Italian government. Three of the country’s four largest parties have met President Sergio Mattarella as he attempts the difficult task of forming a government from the stalemate delivered by March’s general election.

Luigi Di Maio, head of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), remains the only leader yet to speak with Mattarella after the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) and right-wing coalition partners — the League and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia […]
