Voice of the Village: The Generosity Economy

Voice of the Village: The Generosity Economy

By Judie Donaldson

Have you ever heard of “the generosity economy”? I hadn’t until I became familiar with Buddhism. It’s pretty darn impressive. Let me explain.

In the Buddhist community, learning about the Buddhist philosophy and principles is a central activity. Needless to say, then, Buddhist teachers are valued. And can you imagine this? They don’t charge a fee for their teaching because generosity is a central tenet in Buddhism. Teachers share their knowledge from their heart and out of generosity, and students, if they wish, can express their appreciation by making a financial gift. So, hmm. I guess that’s […]

Universal Basic Income, non-prophecy and the liberal nightmare

Posted by: I hate Uber ( )

I might have missed something but when did LDS leaders discuss the two big fears of today?

* That almost every job will become obsolete and that automation is already outstripping job creation worldwide. * That our descendants will live their lives under total surveillance. Both of these processes are well underway. Yet the LDS wants to discuss pornography more. The idea that almost evrryone will be unemployed is anathema to Mormonism & its work ethic yet it will come as the direct result of (neo)liberal economics practised by most governnents.Ezra Taft Benson would be […]

Steffen Hertog , Associate Professor in Comparative Politics in the Department of Government at the London School of Economics and Political Science , has published a paper in Energy Transitions (Hertog, 2017) which relates the efficiency in wealth sharing and basic income.

The paper makes the case that hydrocarbon producers with higher rents per capita make a unique category of the rent-dependent nations. Those that face specific development challenges not present in mid-rent nations. With a look into the patterns of rent distributions in high-rent countries, excessive public employment, and energy subsidies, Hertog argues that these […]

Four questions Labour supporters of UBI need to answer

Four questions Labour supporters of UBI need to answer

Labour Labour Party UBI Universal Basic Income is a concept that has been growing dramatically in popularity within certain circles in Britain’s political landscape. John McDonnell is leading the campaign for the idea within Labour, while outside our party some SNP councils are also trialling schemes.

Before committing ourselves to this policy, there are some important questions to be addressed, from the political and financial costs incurred by UBI to its effects on the redistribution of wealth, which must lie at the heart of Labour politics.

First, let’s discuss the necessity of UBI. Its supporters claim that new technology and […]

Analyzing the idea of universal basic income

Analyzing the idea of universal basic income

Imagine you have purchased a Pennsylvania lottery ticket for the fun of it one night while stopping for some snacks at a local gas station. You have no expectation of winning anything but rather just want a little thrill. The next night, you tune into the drawing of the winning numbers and cannot believe what you are seeing when your numbers match exactly. You might not have won $100 million, but for your small investment of $1 into a ticket, you will now be receiving $1,000 a month for the rest of your life.

You probably won’t be able to […]

Universal Basic Income: What It Is And How It Could Be Implemented

Universal Basic Income: What It Is And How It Could Be Implemented

The idea of a universal basic income (UBI) has gained increased popularity over the last few years. While it used to be a fringe group that supported it there are now prominent advocates for the concept of a universal basic income like Elon Musk. The basic idea is simple and has been around in some form or another for a long time. Every human being would be entitled to a periodic income that would not be affected by your social, academic or career background. This system would be a big change for our current economy and it would have […]
