Approximately 1,300 homes were destroyed by wildfires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in November of 2016. Singer and actress Dolly Parton, who comes from the same county, created a fund through the Dollywood Foundation to help families uprooted by the fires. The My People Fund provided $1,000 USD per month to each family who lost a home, beginning in December 2016 and ending in May 2017 with a final payment of $5,000 . Approximately 900 families were found eligible for this program.

Should Korea introduce negative income tax?

By Park Jae-hyuk
The idea of a negative income tax has reemerged in Korea as an alternative to a universal welfare system.
A negative income tax allows people earning below a certain level of income to receive supplemental pay from the government, instead of paying taxes. British politician Juliet Rhys-Williams, U.S. economist Milton Friedman and several other scholars proposed the concept in the past.
Although the negative income tax was first described in the 1940s, it has recently been a hot topic here amid growing concerns over the Moon Jae-in administration’s spending on universal welfare benefits.
For the health, […]

Utopia for Realists: Revisiting Ideas of Universal Basic Income

Utopia for Realists: Revisiting Ideas of Universal Basic Income

I dare say that few of us truly understand why our work and welfare systems are the way they are, and that many of us have thought, in at least in passing, that things seem a little back to front.

Dutchman Rutger Bregman has done more than think about the this-system-seems-broken concept. He’s researched and penned a case for universal basic income (UBI)—a foundational amount of no-strings-attached money for everyone—and other similarly counterintuitive concepts such as opening up international borders. (The latter warrants a post all of its own.) In the pragmatic, evidence-based Utopia for Realists , Bregman shows how […]

This is a multifaceted issue, the components of which must be considered concurrently, so please be wary of drawing premature conclusions.

How can society advance if no one is motivated to create?

The Enlightenment is littered with scientists who were independently wealthy and did nothing but create. Evidence suggests that squabbling for basic sustenance is an impediment to creativity, not an inducement – that evidence traces back as far as the advent of agriculture. And who funded the scientists, the inventors, the innovators? "Bbbbbbut this one thing was funded by the Government […]

The new report, entitled “Jobs lost, jobs gained: Workforce transitions in a time of automation,” builds on previous MGI research published in January of 2017. The consulting firm now estimates that between 400 million and 800 million individuals […]

Assessing the case for basic income in light of automation and labour market change

About this research

The project will incorporate regression analysis of the relationships between labour market dysfunction and attitudes towards basic income and welfare; microsimulation of the fiscal and distributional effects of basic income schemes and alternative reform packages across Europe; and research into the ‘framing’ of basic income via polling or social media data analysis.

The study will address the following core research questions: How is the case for basic income justified in reference to automation and technological change, and how persuasive are the empirical and theoretical underpinnings of such arguments? What are the implications of technological and labour […]

Canada trials a basic income for unemployed workers

Canada trials a basic income for unemployed workers

Canada is testing a basic income policy for unemployed workers to see it’s impact over the low income groups. According to this new policy, more than 4,000 citizens of the Canadian province of Ontario will receive a monthly allowance from the government and the government will monitor the affect of the allowance over the health and well being of the people. The new allowance will allow the people to be more productive and have a positive attitude towards the society.

Canada is following the footsteps of a number of other countries who have started the same policy to see it’s […]
