Experts Say Universal Basic Income Would Boost US Economy by Staggering $2.5 Trillion UBI in the U.S.A.

In recent months, everyone from Elon Musk to Sir Richard Branson has come out in favor of universal basic income (UBI), a system in which every person receives a regular payment simply for being alive. Now, a study carried out by the Roosevelt Institute has concluded that implementing a UBI in the U.S. could have a positive effect on the nation’s economy. The study looked at three separate proposals: a “basic […]

Universal credit is no answer to growing poverty

Universal credit is no answer to growing poverty

You deserve credit for drawing attention to the failings of universal credit ( Report, 24 November ). Yet despite all the evidence of this inadequacy, you appear to assume, like the two main political parties, that with sufficient pause such a system can be made to work in a way that is ultimately sustainable. Universal credit is unfixable. Whatever the merits of the original idea, it is astounding that the government could not have foreseen in the early stages of development that as an overall system of benefit, it would prove to be unworkable because of the large variety […]

21st-century industrial revolution: Will robots steal your job?

Get short URL © Javier Pierini / Getty Images More and more jobs are at risk of being outsourced to a cheaper and more efficient robot. Is your job one of them – and if so, will a universal basic income (UBI) prove to be the panacea for increased automation?

Many or most of us wish we could work shorter hours and have more time for family, friends and fun. The struggle to reduce the working day spans several generations. In the 19th century our ancestors, fighting tooth-and-nail with banner in hand, won several victories. Following the February 1848 Revolution […]

Advisers urged to check annuity rates amid flurry of changes

By Carmen Reichman Advisers are being encouraged to check and re-check the best annuities on offer to clients amid a flurry of rate changes as the market continues to shake off jitters from hitting rock bottom in 2016.

So far between 23 October and 23 November there have been eight rate changes, according to data from investment firm Hargreaves Lansdown.

Legal & General and Canada Life adjusted their rates on 23 November following earlier changes made by Hodge Life and Aviva .L&G revised its enhanced annuity rates four times in November, albeit not always upwards. It referred to the changes as […]

REVIEW OF “THE WORLD OWES YOU A LIVING” (from 2003)

This essay was originally published in the USBIG NewsFlash in October 2003.

A few years ago on April 1, a New York public radio station did an interview with a woman who wrote books entirely by downloading bits and pieces of other people’s writing from the internet. That interview was an April Fool’s Day joke, but as any post-modern artist or Hip Hop DJ can tell you, it is quite possible to do something that’s new and creative by piecing together bits of already existing material. And that is exactly what Vancouver audio-author Matt Fair has done with his […]

Need a better income? Open enrollment sessions here for Lindsay’s Basic Income pilot

Open enrollment sessions for the basic income pilot will be held at Celebrations or Kawartha Lakes Library (pictured). The Ontario government is now holding the first ever open enrollment sessions in Lindsay for its basic income pilot, with the first one scheduled in Lindsay for Nov. 30 at Celebrations (the old Queen Street United Church).

If you miss that chance, there will be many other open enrollment sessions, including Dec. 4-5 at Kawartha Lakes Public Library in Lindsay, Dec. 13 and Dec. 15, also at the library and again at Celebrations on Dec. 18 and Dec. 20.

What would I do if everyone had a basic income?

What would I do if everyone had a basic income?

What would you do if you had an unconditional basic income? I regularly ask people this question, because the answer is the true definition of basic income. Basic income isn’t really about the money. It’s about what money enables us to do in our lives that we’d otherwise be prevented from doing without enough money to meet our basic needs, and without enough time to really live, due to all of our time being spent just trying to stay alive.

I already have a basic income via crowdfunding , which I use to advocate for basic income for everyone, […]

As AI displaces people from jobs, its creators look to ways of taming people

Silicon Valley is aware of the speed of the rise of artificial intelligence and robotics. They also know this is not the Industrial Revolution Part 2, where new forms of work will arise to replace the ones that industry made redundant. There are few things as aggravating as when people begin to advocate for a good idea for entirely the wrong reason. That good idea is a universal basic income, where the State pays people a guaranteed amount so that everyone can sustain a frugal […]

The jury’s still out on whether universal basic income will save us from job-stealing robots

Does free money change nothing or everything?

Universal basic income (UBI) is the hottest idea in social security since Franklin Roosevelt signed the New Deal in 1935, and it is fairly understood as free money given to citizens by their government. Though the idea traces its roots back to the 16th century as a “cure for theft,” UBI has gained new consideration and momentum these days, as high-profile techno-doomsayers like SpaceX founder Elon Musk point to […]
