Universal basic income for Artificial Intelligence caused job loss pain? How it may build a meaningful life

Artificial intelligence (AI), industrial revolution 4.0 and robotics are transforming the way we live, work and entertain ourselves. Sophia, a humanoid robot, recently appeared in a TV programme in the UK, Good Morning Britain with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid. It smiled alluringly and joked in the interview. Sophia complimented the interviewer—“I love your posh English accent. It really has a nice ring”—and expressed its views on its ideal life companion: “super-wise, compassionate, super-genius, ideally”. Though, technically, the robot is barely over a year-old, and thus “a bit young to worry about romance”—that is if we humanise it.

We Already Have a Solution for the Robot Apocalypse. It’s 200 Years Old.
A brief history of universal basic income.

DELPHINE D’AMORA
From the window of his university office in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, philosophy professor Philippe Van Parijs—considered by many to be Europe’s most prominent advocate for the idea that the state should provide a regular income to every citizen—can see the mailbox where he sent off invitations to the first “basic income” conference more than 30 years ago. “I’m quite amazed by the seed we threw on the ground now,” he says. After decades of obscurity, the idea is suddenly […]

Some Hamiltonians may be receiving a little extra money with the basic income pilot’s first run underway.

The pilot program was introduced in April 2017 and is currently being held in Hamilton, Lindsay and Thunder Bay. Eligible individuals could receive $17,000 a year. Those in couples may receive up to $24,000 a year.

Basic income national proposal released by ‘UBI Taiwan’

Basic income national proposal released by ‘UBI Taiwan’

UBI Taiwan held a press conference to describe their proposal to give every Taiwanese citizen a basic income each month. Skeptics and supporters were given details of how Taiwan could feasibly implement such a policy.

Taiwan’s extremely low tax rates coupled with a highly developed economy make Taiwan a feasible candidate to establish an Unconditional Basic Income (UBI), the group said.

UBI Taiwan was established in 2016 to bring attention to this policy in Taiwan, where it has not yet been a major topic of national discussion. On the heels of the press conference, UBI Taiwan has scheduled meetings with political party […]

A basic income for all: a conversation between Maurizio Ferrera and Philippe Van Parijs

Contributi internazionali Maurizio Ferrera (MF): The first formulation of your theory on basic income appeared in the book Real Freedom for All , published in 1995. The book cover shows a young surfer. You mentioned to me that the clue came from John Rawls. A few years earlier, he had asked you: why should Malibu surfers receive a state benefit? I would start this conversation, thirty years on, by addressing you the same question.

Philippe Van Parijs (PVP) : A basic income is a regular cash payment made to every member of some political community on an individual basis, […]

Need guaranteed, increasing retirement income? This may be the answer

Need guaranteed, increasing retirement income? This may be the answer

It’s well known that people tend to become more financially conservative the closer they are to retirement, and grow increasingly cautious with their pension savings.

At that point the focus is often more about protecting accrued savings rather than building funds for retirement. This has become even more topical after pension freedoms were introduced in 2015, which has given people greater choice but also greater chance of choosing an unsuitable option.

While retirement objectives vary, they commonly include: having a guaranteed, increasing income which keeps pace with inflation preserving and growing pension savings having a degree of flexibility to cater for […]

After Universal Basic Income, The Flood

I feel like most of the negative points are missing the mark slightly. For instance, a UBI that cuts Social Security, Medicare, and disability insurance isn’t what most people are clamoring for. I think instead a massive tax on corporate profits aided by AI and automation (ie, a "robot tax," though I hate that term) is how most people envision that going down. But I’ll leave the line-by-line debunking to someone else.

The problem is that the author is so focused on these lazy hippies that don’t want to work. I don’t think that’s really the whole point of UBI. […]
