Artificial intelligence (AI), industrial revolution 4.0 and robotics are transforming the way we live, work and entertain ourselves. Sophia, a humanoid robot, recently appeared in a TV programme in the UK, Good Morning Britain with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid. It smiled alluringly and joked in the interview. Sophia complimented the interviewer—“I love your posh English accent. It really has a nice ring”—and expressed its views on its ideal life companion: “super-wise, compassionate, super-genius, ideally”. Some Hamiltonians may be receiving a little extra money with the basic income pilot’s first run underway.

The pilot program was introduced in April 2017 and is currently being held in Hamilton, Lindsay and Thunder Bay. Eligible individuals could receive $17,000 a year. Those in couples may receive up to $24,000 a year.

UBI Taiwan held a press conference to describe their proposal to give every Taiwanese citizen a basic income each month. Skeptics and supporters were given details of how Taiwan could feasibly implement such a policy.

Taiwan’s extremely low tax rates coupled with a highly developed economy make Taiwan a feasible candidate to establish an Unconditional Basic Income (UBI), the group said.

I feel like most of the negative points are missing the mark slightly. For instance, a UBI that cuts Social Security, Medicare, and disability insurance isn’t what most people are clamoring for. I think instead a massive tax on corporate profits aided by AI and automation (ie, a "robot tax," though I hate that term) is how most people envision that going down. But I’ll leave the line-by-line debunking to someone else.

The problem is that the author is so focused on these lazy hippies that don’t want to work. I don’t think that’s really the whole point of UBI. […]
