TECH EXPERT: People who fear robots taking their jobs ‘lack imagination’

TECH EXPERT: People who fear robots taking their jobs 'lack imagination'

Dr Catherine Ball. (Source: Vivid Sydney, supplied) There’s been much talk about whether the rise of intelligent robots, machine learning and artificial intelligence has the potential for social and economic unrest, by leaving millions or even billions of humans without jobs.

Oxford University professor of globalisation and former World Bank vice president Ian Goldin told Business Insider in May that emerging technologies could trigger a “rapid widening of inequality” as many groups find it increasingly difficult to secure “decent jobs”.

However, one tech expert disagrees with this view – and says those that are anxious for their jobs have an irrational […]

Do you support Universal Basic Income?

Do you support Universal Basic Income?

As more of a flat tax person, I am not particularly in favor of any tax breaks.

That said, I went back and watched the video snippet and they didn’t mention corporate "tax breaks" so much as corporate "welfare", and included things like agricultural subsidies.

Me personally, I am not in favor of UBI at all. The argument this guy was making (forgot his first name, last name was Murray) was that UBI would be cheaper for the tax payer and better for the economy. I had never heard this argument before (delete all entitlements in return for granting a UBI) […]

Clinton’s rejection of a nationwide dividend has a lesson for Alaska’s fiscal plight

No need to announce the amount of the Permanent Fund dividend on live TV this year, with a phony sense of mystery about the number.

Action by the Legislature and Gov. Bill Walker took the suspense out of the exercise this year with a bipartisan decision two months ago to set the 2017 dividend at $1,100 in a state law. That followed the most difficult and important decision of Walker’s time in office — the 2016 veto that cut the dividend to $1,000, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court.

Those who feel shortchanged by a dividend that is about […]
