UK ‘pensions freedom’ retirees warned of losses in market shock

Retirees in Britain’s dramatically changed at-retirement market face years of losses in a market downturn due to their investment holdings, Aegon has warned.

Research by the insurance and pensions provider found that many people drawing their pensions since the UK introduced its ‘pensions freedom’ rules two years ago, were sticking with “familiar” investment strategies and well-known funds.

Using data from its own platform, the firm found little difference between investment strategies used by pensions ‘drawdown’ customers and those that had opted to continue investing for a pension.Drawdown investors have different demands on their money and shorter timeframes, meaning strategies should differ.Yet […]

The radical future has to become a radical present. Interview with Nick Srnicek

The radical future has to become a radical present. Interview with Nick Srnicek

Jakub Dymek: What’s behind the idea of a ‘radical future’ on which you and Alex Williams just wrote a book?

Nick Srnicek*: The core argument is the idea that the left has given up on the idea of the future and we have to reclaim it. With changes to the labour market, through automation, we can start building towards something like a post-work society. We have to get rid of the centrality of work to our lives. We have to build alternatives. There are four demands. One, to push for automation – let’s automate all the drudgery and […]

Scotland should pilot basic income trials, GCVS meeting is told A universal basic income (UBI) is an idea whose time has come, a major third sector event was told.

Universal basic income would grow the economy PERMANENTLY, claims left-leaning think tank

Giving all Americans a guaranteed salary would boost the economy permanently, a new study has found.

The study, conducted by the Roosevelt Institute, a left-leaning think tank, looks into how a universal basic income (UBI) would impact the American economy.

In such a society, each citizen is entitled to a basic income, which would come in the form of a monthly check. That check would likely not be the person’s primary income, but it would establish a basic standard of living, and provide security for those who find themselves out of work. A new study from the Roosevelt Institute has found […]

A $1,000 per month cash handout would grow the economy by $2.5 trillion, new study says

Giving every adult in the United States a $1,000 cash handout per month would grow the economy by $2.5 trillion by 2025, according to a new study on universal basic income .

The report was released in August by the left-leaning Roosevelt Institute . Roosevelt research director Marshall Steinbaum, Michalis Nikiforos at Bard College’s Levy Institute, and Gennaro Zezza at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio in Italy co-authored the study.

The study made economic forecasts for three proposals: a full universal basic income in which every adult gets $1,000 a month ($12,000 a year), a partial basic income in […]

OT: Universal Basic Income?

The reason it’s falling apart is there is a lot of corruption in the NYC area. Everything cost 2x more in that area. I’m currently in the DFW area and they are building new highways and roads. There aren’t any state taxes. The country’s one trillion dollar plus shortfall in infrastructure repairs isnt because of local corruption. Its because republicans wont allow any large scale infrastructure spending without a backdoor way of privatizing everything. Its because they dont want to raise taxes on the rich and large corporations to do it.

There are state taxes in your area, sales […]

Those doing postgraduate and further study, including future doctors, aren’t eligible for the student allowance and some parties are promising to change that. NZ First wants to help students who are racking up debt by offering write-off schemes for those who take up skilled work in the regions. Labour and National are both offering boosts to the student allowance, while ACT wants to scrap it altogether. TOP wants to bring in a universal payment for 18 […]

How should boomers vote after living the Kiwi dream?

How should boomers vote after living the Kiwi dream?

Stephen Coote, pictured with his granddaughter, has worked hard to achieve the Kiwi dream of homeownership, but is still undecided on who to vote for in this month’s election. I’m a Kiwi ‘dreamist’. This means I’ve pursued and achieved the Kiwi dream of buying a home and paying off the mortgage.

Our property is our refuge and a focal point for family. When we depart, it’s nice to think loved ones who carry our genes and ideals will benefit from what we leave behind.

A freehold home gives us almost-seniors a feeling of security. We established it through working hard, saving, […]

It's about greater productivity – Stupid

John Lennon’s utopian song, ‘Imagine’, went over the top. But, at election time, it’s haunting. Imagine if no one had to pay for anything. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Imagine if everything were free. Free food, housing, healthcare, education, transport, television, broadband, you name it.

Imagine if the government gave everyone enough money to live on and then topped it up a bit so we could have some fun. No strings attached.OK, OK, John Lennon’s haunting and utopian song went over the top. It imagined a world with no possessions, just one big commune of sharing. Imagine not having anything you or […]
